Chapter 16 - LAKE JUNIPER

Detective Hayes refused to let me go to the cabin.

Rachel changed that decision.

She called my phone from an unregistered number.

“I need you to bring Emma.”

Her voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“You will never see her again.”

“She is my daughter.”

“You drugged her.”

“I was trying to show everyone you couldn’t protect her.”

“You nearly killed her.”

“That was David.”

“David says it was you.”

“David lies when he is afraid.”

I kept her talking while investigators traced the call.

Rachel said Thomas had left documents at the cabin proving that I had no right to Emma.

She believed the embryo agreement was invalid.

She wanted me to sign a statement recognizing her as Emma’s mother.

In return, she would surrender peacefully.

“You don’t need Emma there for that,” I said.

“I need her to hear the truth.”

“She is seven.”

“She is old enough to know who gave her life.”

“You gave genetic material.”

“I carried her.”

“I gave birth to her.”

“I held her through every fever.”

“I taught her to walk.”

“I stayed beside her when your plan stopped her breathing.”

Rachel’s voice sharpened.

“You had the life that belonged to me.”

There it was.

Not love.

Not justice.

Resentment.

Rachel did not see Emma as a child with her own needs.

She saw her as proof of what she believed had been stolen.

Police surrounded the cabin before sunrise.

Rachel had already left.

Inside, they found food, cash, forged identification, and photographs of Emma taken over several years.

A map showed our house, Emma’s school, the hospital, and my parents’ property.

One location was circled in red.

The old fertility clinic.

The building had been abandoned but not demolished.

Dr. Price’s records suggested a private laboratory room remained in the basement.

Rachel believed the original embryo documents were hidden there.

Detective Hayes sent officers immediately.

Before they arrived, the clinic’s fire alarm activated.

A security camera captured Rachel entering through the rear door.

Emma looked over my shoulder at the image.

Then she whispered something that made Mark go pale.

“That’s the woman who watched me at school.”

Rachel had been closer to Emma than any of us knew.
