Evan stepped forward.
“This is forged,” he snapped. “She was sick, she wasn’t thinking clearly—”
Mr. Halden finally looked at him.
“She signed it three weeks before her death.”
Silence again.
Three weeks.
I felt something tighten in my chest.
That was before she died.
Before the accident report.
Before Evan called me crying on the phone, pretending to be a grieving husband.
Celeste leaned in, her voice sharp.
“She hated you,” she said to me. “Why would she leave you everything?”
I finally spoke.
My voice was quiet.
Because grief teaches you control.
“Because she stopped trusting her husband.”
Evan’s jaw clenched.
“What did you say?”
I turned slightly toward him.
For the first time since the coffin closed, I looked directly at him.
“She knew,” I said.
A pause.
“She knew everything.”
The word “everything” hung in the air like a blade.
Mr. Halden stepped forward again, opening a second sealed document.
“There is an additional recording attached to the will,” he said.
