Chapter 3: The Balloon That Told the Truth

The breakthrough came from something everyone else considered worthless.
A silver birthday balloon.
Deputy Sarah Collins carefully placed the deflated Mylar balloon onto the evidence table.
"It was tangled in the porch railing."
"It wasn't helium."
"It was filled with regular air."
Officer Miller frowned.
"Why does that matter?"
"It means somebody tied it by hand."
The crime lab technician placed the balloon beneath forensic lighting.
A faint reddish smear became visible near the ribbon.
Minutes later...
The fingerprint comparison finished.
No match to Ellen.
No match to Mark.
Officer Miller slowly looked toward Claire.
He already knew.
Arthur was brought back into the kitchen.
The old man's confidence had disappeared.
His shoulders slumped.
His hands trembled violently.
"You didn't put Lily inside that bin."
Arthur said nothing.
"But you knew who did."
Silence.
"You removed evidence."
"You delayed calling 911."
"You lied repeatedly."
Arthur squeezed his eyes shut.
One tear escaped.
"I thought..."
His voice barely existed.
"I thought she'd calm down."
Officer Miller remained silent.
Arthur continued.
"Claire was overwhelmed."
"Lily kept crying."
"The decorations weren't right."
"She wanted another cake."
"Another game."
"Another song."
"Claire covered her ears."
Arthur buried his face in both hands.
"She kept saying..."
"'Make the noise stop.'"
"'Please make the noise stop.'"
He began sobbing.
"She told Lily..."
"'Let's play the quiet game.'"
"'Hide inside the birthday box.'"
"Lily laughed."
"She climbed inside."
Arthur's breathing collapsed into broken gasps.
"Claire closed the lid."
"She taped it."
"Then she walked away."
At that exact moment...
Glass shattered behind them.
Ellen stood frozen in the doorway.
The water glass had slipped from her hand.
Crystal fragments scattered across the kitchen floor.
Standing behind her...
Claire.
Her face carried no anger.
No fear.
No remorse.
Only emptiness.
"Lily wouldn't stop screaming."
Her voice sounded strangely peaceful.
"I just wanted silence."
She looked toward the rain outside.
"I wanted to hear the wind."
The room became impossibly still.
May you like
Even the storm outside seemed to stop.
Officer Miller slowly reached for his handcuffs.
