Chapter 2: Cracks Beneath the Perfect Family

Rain arrived just after sunset.
By midnight, thunder rattled every window in the Parker home.
The birthday decorations still hung throughout the dining room.
Pink streamers.
Half-melted candles.
An untouched birthday cake sat beneath plastic wrap.
The cheerful decorations now resembled evidence.
Officer Miller converted the kitchen into a temporary interrogation room.
Bright fluorescent lights buzzed overhead.
Mark sat alone across the table.
His untouched coffee had gone cold.
"You told dispatch Lily disappeared during hide-and-seek."
"I thought she had."
"You also told dispatch you searched the backyard."
"I did."
Miller silently slid several crime scene photographs across the table.
One showed muddy footprints leading directly to the garbage bin.
Only one set returned.
Another showed the untouched grass around the yard.
No search patterns.
No footprints.
"You never looked."
Mark rubbed both hands over his face.
"I was confused."
"No."
Miller leaned forward.
"You were buying time."
Mark's breathing accelerated.
"We argued this morning."
"About?"
"Hospital bills."
"The mortgage."
"Lily's treatments."
"Everything."
His voice finally cracked.
"But I'd never hurt her."
Miller remained expressionless.
"You don't have to."
He tapped another photograph.
"Sometimes standing by is enough."
Meanwhile...
In the living room...
Claire Parker sat completely motionless.
Mark's younger sister.
Twenty-eight years old.
Still wearing the pastel dress she'd chosen for Lily's birthday party.
She hadn't asked once about Lily.
Not once.
A detective offered her water.
She smiled politely.
Then asked whether anyone had saved the birthday cake.
The detective slowly lowered the cup.
Something wasn't right.
Far beyond ordinary shock.
Arthur watched from across the room.
His eyes briefly closed.
For just one second...
Pure guilt crossed his face.
Officer Miller noticed.

The cracks inside the Parker family were widening.
Someone was hiding far more than an accident.
