The person who surprised me most wasn't my parents.
It was Carter.
He showed up at my front porch three days later.

He looked exhausted.
"I didn't know."
I believed him instantly.

He rubbed his eyes.
"I quit the university housing contract."
"I won't pay for school with Anna's future."
Inside the house, Anna quietly stepped into the hallway.
Carter looked at her.
"I'm sorry."
She didn't answer immediately.
Finally she said,
"You didn't steal it."
"But you don't get to pretend it didn't happen."
He nodded.
"I know."
Then he left.
No excuses.
No demands.
Just consequences.
