Most people thought my parents owned Harper Delivery.
They didn't.
Not really.
Twenty years earlier, when they nearly went bankrupt, Owen and I quietly invested everything we had saved.
We never asked for publicity.
We simply signed one agreement.
Thirty percent ownership.
Enough to protect the company.
Enough to stop reckless decisions.

To remove management if fraud ever endangered the business.
Nobody remembered those papers.
Except me.

Monday morning I walked into the office carrying a slim leather folder.
The accountant looked relieved.
"I've been waiting for you."
Apparently the bank had already notified the business that Robert and Janet were under investigation.
Credit lines were freezing.
Suppliers wanted answers.
Insurance companies were asking questions.
I quietly placed one document after another on the conference table.
Ownership agreement.
Operating bylaws.
Emergency shareholder authority.
The attorney nodded.
"It's valid."
"Mrs. Collins has authority to suspend both managing partners pending investigation."
The room went silent.
Robert stood up so quickly his chair tipped over.
"You can't fire me from my own company!"
I slid the original contract toward him.
"You should have read what you signed twenty years ago."
Janet's face turned white.
She actually whispered,
"I thought that agreement expired..."
"It didn't."
The vote lasted less than five minutes.
Three hands.
One unanimous decision.
Robert and Janet were removed effective immediately.
Security escorted them out.
Employees watched through the windows.
No one clapped.
No one smiled.
People simply returned to work.
