Chapter 7 - THE WIFE WHO CHOSE THE RANCH

Alan was released on bond after a federal judge ruled he was not a flight risk.

The state appealed.

Until the hearing, he wore an ankle monitor and remained at his Houston apartment.

He contacted Avery within an hour.

The court order prohibited direct communication.

He used her favorite florist.

A bouquet arrived with no visible card.

Inside one white rose was a rolled message.

YOUR FATHER USED RACHEL TO DESTROY US.

COME TO THE APARTMENT.

BRING MARGARET’S TRUST.

Avery called Investigator Ortiz.

They prepared a monitored meeting.

I objected.

“She does not need to enter a room with him.”

Avery looked at me.

“I already entered a church with him.”

“This time I know who he is.”

Rachel supported her.

“Let her choose.”

At the apartment, Alan opened the door wearing the shirt Avery bought for their rehearsal dinner.

He had removed his wedding ring.

A bottle of wine stood on the table.

Two glasses waited beside it.

“You brought police,” he said.

Avery touched the recording device beneath her jacket.

“No.”

“You were always a terrible liar.”

“I learned from you.”

He laughed.

For a moment, his charm returned.

“You are hurt.”

“You are confused.”

“Your father filled your head with documents you do not understand.”

“You are still married to Rachel.”

“That marriage ended years ago.”

“Not legally.”

“Paperwork.”

He stepped closer.

“What we have is real.”

Avery looked at him.

“What do we have?”

“A future.”

“Built on my father’s ranch?”

“Built on opportunity.”

Alan spread architectural plans across the table.

The real plans.

The ones that demolished the cemetery.

“We can still do this.”

“The injunction can be challenged.”

“Your father will not live forever.”

Avery stared at him.

“My mother is buried there.”

“We can move her.”

The words destroyed the final illusion.

Not because Avery had not seen the plans.

Because Alan said it casually.

Like Margaret was another fence.

Another tree.

Another obstacle that equipment could relocate.

“You never loved me,” Avery said.

Alan’s expression softened.

“I chose you.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“You think your father loves you more?”

“He made you wait your whole life for land he refuses to share.”

“He watched you struggle while sitting on millions.”

“You deserve your inheritance.”

“I deserve the truth.”

Avery placed the copied trust document on the table.

Alan reached for it.

She kept one hand on the pages.

“Tell me why you slapped my father.”

“He attacked me.”

“The video shows otherwise.”

“He provoked me.”

“How?”

“He humiliated me.”

“By refusing to give you his ranch?”

Alan’s control began slipping.

“You do not understand what I sacrificed.”

“I spent two years listening to that old man talk about cattle and drought.”

“I pretended to care about your dead mother.”

Avery’s face went still.

Alan realized he had gone too far.

He stepped toward her.

“Avery.”

She backed away.

“Did you kill Rachel?”

“No.”

“Did you try?”

“It was an accident.”

Rachel heard the words from the surveillance van.

So did Investigator Ortiz.

Alan continued.

“She grabbed the steering wheel.”

“She wanted us both dead.”

Avery looked toward the hidden camera.

“Did you forge her death record?”

“I was protecting myself.”

“Did you marry me knowing she was alive?”

“I believed she would never come back.”

Avery removed the trust document from the table.

Alan grabbed her wrist.

She cried out.

Officers entered.

Alan released her immediately.

“She attacked me.”

The lie arrived on instinct.

His hands were still around the red marks on her skin.

Investigator Ortiz placed him against the wall.

His bond was revoked.

As officers led him away, Alan looked at Avery.

“You have nothing without me.”

She held up the trust papers.

May you like

“No.”

“I have a father I nearly lost because of you.”
