Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN FROM THE THIRD SUV

The woman who stepped from the third SUV wore a dark blue suit and carried no handbag.

She was in her early forties, with a faint scar running from her left temple to the edge of her jaw.

Alan’s hand stopped on the locksmith’s shoulder.

The color drained from his face so quickly that even the locksmith noticed.

“No,” Alan whispered.

The woman looked directly at him.

“Hello, husband.”

Avery had arrived in Alan’s car only seconds earlier.

She stood near the ranch gate wearing yesterday’s wedding dress beneath a borrowed coat.

Her mascara was smudged.

Her hair had fallen from its pins.

She looked from Alan to the stranger.

“What did she call you?”

Alan recovered enough to laugh.

“This is insane.”

He pointed toward Robert Hawthorne.

“Clifford hired an actress.”

Robert opened the sealed folder.

“No actress.”

He removed a certified marriage record from Colorado.

The document named Alan Pierce and Rachel Mercer.

The marriage had occurred eight years earlier.

No divorce had ever been filed.

No annulment had ever been granted.

Rachel lifted her left hand.

A narrow gold wedding band remained on her finger.

Avery stared at it.

“You told me you had never been married.”

Alan moved toward her.

“Avery, listen to me.”

“Rachel disappeared years ago.”

“She abandoned the marriage.”

“I believed she was dead.”

Rachel’s expression did not change.

“You told people I died because you paid someone to burn my car.”

The state investigator stepped between them.

Her name was Lena Ortiz.

She wore a badge at her waist and held an arrest warrant in one hand.

“Alan Pierce, step away from the house.”

Alan looked toward the copied ranch keys inside the velvet box he had carried from the reception.

He had brought a locksmith because none of the copies worked.

Robert noticed him looking.

“Margaret changed every exterior lock before she died.”

“Clifford changed them again three weeks ago.”

“The keys you displayed at the wedding open nothing.”

Alan’s jaw tightened.

“Avery had a right to make copies.”

“The ranch will be hers.”

“Eventually.”

I stepped from behind Robert’s SUV.

My hip still hurt from the fall.

My cheek had swollen.

The dried blood at the corner of my mouth pulled when I spoke.

“Not if you are standing beside her.”

Avery flinched.

“Dad.”

She moved toward me.

Then she stopped.

Alan had spent two years teaching her to doubt every instinct that pulled her in my direction.

He reached for her hand.

“This is exactly what I warned you about.”

“Your father is confused.”

“He hired people to interrupt our marriage.”

“He is punishing you because you chose me.”

Rachel looked at Avery.

“I used to believe him too.”

Alan turned on her.

“You stole money from me.”

“You tried to have me committed.”

“You were unstable.”

Rachel removed a small recorder from her pocket.

His own voice played through the ranch yard.

“Once the doctors sign the incapacity papers, the orchard belongs to me.”

Alan lunged for the device.

Investigator Ortiz caught his arm.

“Do that again and I will add resisting arrest.”

“I have done nothing illegal.”

“You forged collateral documents using Mr. Bennett’s ranch.”

“You assaulted him in front of two hundred witnesses.”

“You entered this property after receiving formal notice that you had no ownership rights.”

Alan looked toward Avery.

“Tell them I have permission.”

Avery’s mouth opened.

No words came out.

Robert handed her a copy of the loan documents.

Her name appeared beneath Alan’s.

So did my forged signature.

The amount was eighteen million dollars.

The stated purpose was luxury residential development.

The collateral was every acre of Bennett Ranch.

Avery looked at her husband.

“You said those were preliminary business plans.”

“They were.”

“You used my father’s land.”

“I was building our future.”

“It wasn’t yours.”

Alan’s expression changed.

The loving husband vanished.

“You signed the application.”

“You told me it was for a mortgage after the wedding.”

“You should read what you sign.”

The cruelty of the sentence finally reached her.

Alan had used the same technique on Rachel.

He had used it on me.

Now he was using it on my daughter less than twenty-four hours after promising to protect her.

Investigator Ortiz placed him in handcuffs.

Avery began crying.

Alan looked at her as the officers led him toward the second SUV.

“Do not let your father destroy this.”

Avery watched him go.

May you like

Then Rachel spoke quietly.

“He said the same thing when the police took him away from my family’s orchard.”
