CHAPTER 3: EVERYTHING FALLS APART

The dinner ended in complete chaos.
Relatives quietly gathered their coats.
Neighbors suddenly remembered they had somewhere else to be.
No one wanted to stay.
Not after hearing my father's final words.
Jason finally caught up with me outside.
"Hannah, wait."
I stopped.
"What?"
"I didn't know."
"You didn't stop her."
"I was shocked."
I laughed bitterly.
"You watched my mother slap me."
"I didn't want to make things worse."
"You already did."
He reached for my hand.
I stepped back.
"I needed someone beside me."
His shoulders dropped.
"I love you."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You loved the version of me you thought had nothing."
His silence answered everything.
We were over.
Inside the house, raised voices echoed through the hallway.
My mother and Chloe were arguing.
For the first time in years...
They weren't united.
They were blaming each other.
Robert approached me quietly.
"There's something else your father wanted you to know."
He handed me copies of financial records.
Over $420,000.
Withdrawn over six years.
Luxury purchases.
Vacations.
Designer handbags.
Car payments.
Every dollar traced back to accounts my father believed were funding his retirement.
"He discovered it during his cancer treatments," Robert said softly.
"He just never had enough strength to confront them."
My knees nearly gave out.
Dad hadn't only been betrayed.
He'd been robbed.
By the people he loved most.
The next morning, I made my decision.
I wasn't interested in revenge.
I was interested in justice.
My attorney filed civil claims to recover the stolen money.
Not because I wanted it.
Because it had been my father's final wish.
Within weeks, Chloe's expensive SUV was repossessed.
Her credit cards were frozen.
Luxury stores demanded payment.
Friends disappeared overnight.
My mother called me dozens of times.
I answered only once.
"Hannah..."
She cried.
"Please don't do this."
"I didn't."
"What?"
May you like
"You did."
And I hung up.
