CHAPTER 2: THE REAL OWNER

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Robert Miller calmly removed a thick folder from his briefcase.

"I'll repeat myself," he said. "There appears to be a misunderstanding regarding ownership of this property."

My mother forced a laugh.

"This house belongs to me. My husband left everything to me."

Robert looked at her with the kind of sympathy people reserve for someone about to receive devastating news.

"I'm afraid that's incorrect."

He handed me a sealed envelope.

"My client instructed me to give this to you personally after his passing."

My hands trembled.

It was my father's handwriting.

For Hannah. Open only after I'm gone.

I stared at it for a long moment before carefully breaking the seal.

Inside was a single letter.

My sweet Hannah,

If you're reading this, then I wasn't able to tell you everything myself.

I know your mother.

I know Chloe.

And I know exactly what will happen after I'm gone.

A chill crawled down my spine.

They believe I never noticed the money disappearing.

They believe I never questioned the forged signatures, the missing checks, or the "family expenses" that somehow only benefited one child.

Across the room, Chloe suddenly stopped smiling.

My father had known.

Everything.

Robert opened another folder.

"Mr. Brooks created a living trust three years ago."

He laid several documents across the dining table.

"The house..."

He looked directly at me.

"...was transferred into Hannah Brooks' name eighteen months ago."

Silence.

Pure silence.

My mother blinked.

"No..."

Robert nodded once.

"The deed has already been recorded with the county."

She grabbed the papers.

"No! This is fake!"

"It isn't."

"I lived here!"

"You did."

"I paid bills!"

"You paid utilities."

"I'M HIS WIFE!"

"And Mr. Brooks was legally free to transfer his personal property before his death."

My mother collapsed into a chair.

Chloe looked as though someone had drained every drop of blood from her face.

Jason finally found his voice.

"Hannah..."

I didn't even look at him.

Robert continued.

"There is one more matter."

He pulled out another envelope.

"Your father requested this be read aloud in front of the family."

My mother whispered,

"Please..."

Robert ignored her.

"To my wife... if you are hearing this, then you proved me right."

The room froze.

"You spent years convincing everyone Hannah abandoned us."

"The truth is... I begged her to leave."

Every eye turned toward me.

"She had dreams. You wanted obedience."

"She deserved a life bigger than this town."

Tears filled my eyes.

"If you're angry that she owns the house..."

Robert paused.

"Remember this was never your house to control."

Then came the final sentence.

"The only person who never asked me for money... was the one I chose to trust with everything."

May you like

No one spoke.

Not a single word.
