Chapter 8 - THE LAWYER WHO OWNED THE JUDGE
Jonathan Sloan disappeared before police could arrest him.
His law office had been emptied overnight.
Computers were wiped.
Files were burned inside the basement furnace.
His passport and private plane remained behind.
Investigators believed he had not left the country.
Sloan had too much unfinished business.
The family judge assigned to Evelyn’s custody petition was Margaret Keene.
She had signed several blank emergency orders found inside the Lake Briar safe.
Judge Keene denied knowing the documents existed.
She claimed her signature had been forged.
A handwriting expert disagreed.
Bank records showed monthly payments from Sloan’s firm to a consulting company owned by Keene’s husband.
The judge had been paid for years.
She approved emergency guardianships.
Sloan selected the guardians.
The guardians transferred assets into accounts he managed.
Evelyn and Michael were not his first clients.
They were one part of a larger system.
Detective Collins contacted families whose cases had passed through Judge Keene’s courtroom.
Several parents described losing children after sudden accusations.
Medical records disappeared.
Anonymous reports appeared.
Judges declared them unstable.
Once custody changed, trust funds and insurance settlements were drained through legal fees.
Sloan had built a business around destroying families.
Anna discovered the scheme because Lily’s trust was large enough to attract him.
Evelyn provided access.
Michael provided information.
Judge Keene provided court orders.
When Anna resisted, she became a threat to all of them.
Michael remembered Sloan saying something after the funeral.
“Anna was always too curious for her own safety.”
At the time, he thought it was cruel.
Now he understood it may have been a confession.
While investigators searched for Sloan, the hospital prepared to discharge Lily.
Detective Collins arranged a protected residence.
My house was no longer safe.
Lily packed her stuffed rabbit and the pink blanket from her hospital bed.
She tried to appear brave.
As we approached the private elevator, she stopped.
A woman in blue medical clothing stood near the doors.
Lily pulled my hand.
“That’s not a nurse.”
The woman turned away.
Collins blocked her path.
Inside the woman’s pocket was a syringe containing the same sedative found at the Lake Briar house.
She carried an emergency custody order signed by Judge Keene.
The document stated that Lily was to be transferred immediately into Evelyn’s care.
Evelyn was in jail.
The order had been issued that morning.
Judge Keene claimed someone accessed her electronic signature without permission.
The hospital visitor’s real name was Rachel Voss.
She worked as an investigator for Sloan.
Her phone contained a message sent minutes earlier.
TAKE THE CHILD BEFORE MICHAEL TESTIFIES.
Rachel refused to reveal Sloan’s location.
Then Lily noticed a photograph on the woman’s phone.
It showed Sloan standing beside Anna’s damaged car on the night before the crash.
