Chapter 18 - THE TRIAL OF EVELYN HART
Evelyn’s trial began nine months after the luncheon.
The prosecution presented the smartwatch recording first.
The ballroom heard Evelyn order the server to switch Lily’s dessert.
The recording captured her opening my coat pocket.
It captured the whisper that started everything.
“Once he loses custody, the trust will finally be under our control.”
Evan Ross testified that Evelyn paid him to deliver the peanut-covered plate.
Michael testified that she recruited him to document my parenting.
He described the forged reports and the Lake Briar bedroom.
He admitted replacing the injector.
Evelyn’s attorney attacked his credibility.
Michael did not argue.
“I lied for years,” he told the jury.
“That does not make every truth I tell now a lie.”
Medical experts explained how close Lily came to dying.
The counterfeit injector was shown to the jury.
Sloan’s fingerprint remained inside the cap.
Michael’s scratched initials remained beneath the label.
Lily did not testify inside the courtroom.
Her recorded hospital interview was played privately for the judge and jury.
She explained how Evelyn moved the dessert plates.
She described seeing her grandmother reach inside my pocket.
Then she repeated Evelyn’s threat from the emergency room.
Children sometimes remember things incorrectly.
The jury heard Lily answer.
“I remember her face.”
Evelyn testified in her own defense.
She claimed Anna had been unstable.
She claimed I was careless.
She claimed Michael was a gambling addict who invented accusations to reduce his sentence.
Then the prosecutor showed her the Lake Briar bedroom.
“Why was this room prepared before the luncheon?”
Evelyn said it was for family visits.
“Why were sedatives prescribed in Lily’s name?”
She blamed Sloan.
“Why did you remove the injector?”
She said she wanted to test my responsibility.
“Why did you switch the dessert?”
She called it a misunderstanding.
The prosecutor placed the custody petition in front of her.
“You prepared to remove Daniel before the medical emergency occurred.”
Evelyn finally lost her composure.
“My daughter left that money for Lily.”
“She did not leave it for Daniel.”
“Daniel would have thrown it away.”
“He would have let Anna’s so-called victims take everything.”
The courtroom went silent.
Evelyn had admitted motive.
The jury deliberated for five hours.
She was convicted of attempted child endangerment, conspiracy, theft, fraud, witness intimidation, and evidence tampering.
At sentencing, Evelyn asked to address Lily.
I refused.
The judge agreed that Lily did not owe her grandmother an audience.
Evelyn received thirty-two years in prison.
Jonathan Sloan later received multiple life sentences.
Judge Keene received twenty-six years.
Michael pleaded guilty.
Because of his cooperation and his role in rescuing Lily, he received twelve years.
Before officers took him away, Lily gave him a drawing.
It showed two roads.
One disappeared into darkness.
