Chapter 5 - THE SECOND INJECTOR IN THE STORAGE UNIT

Michael’s downtown condo was empty.

The refrigerator contained fresh food.

A half-packed suitcase lay on the bed.

He had left quickly.

Police found gambling statements inside the kitchen cabinet.

Michael owed more than three hundred thousand dollars to illegal sports-betting operators.

Several messages threatened him.

One read:

PAY FRIDAY OR YOUR FAMILY LEARNS WHAT YOU DID.

The first trust transfer occurred three days after that message.

Michael stole from Lily to pay the debt.

But the payments continued after the original balance was cleared.

Once he discovered how easy it was to access the trust, theft became a lifestyle.

Luxury watches.

The condo.

Vacations he claimed were work trips.

A car registered under a shell company.

Michael had lived inside my home because appearing poor protected him from suspicion.

His neighbors at the condo knew him as Matthew Hale.

Detective Collins found a rental agreement for a storage unit near the airport.

Police obtained a warrant that afternoon.

Inside the unit were boxes of family records.

Copies of Anna’s medical files.

Photographs of Lily’s school.

Printed emails between me and my therapist after Anna’s death.

Michael had collected my grief and organized it into evidence.

A locked metal case sat behind the boxes.

Inside was Lily’s second real injector.

The serial number matched her prescription.

Michael’s fingerprints covered the plastic casing.

A small piece of blue fabric was caught beneath the cap.

It matched the suit he wore at the charity luncheon.

He had removed both injectors from my jacket.

He gave one to Evelyn.

He hid the other because two missing injectors made the event appear less like a mistake.

The yellow trainer pen in my jacket was supposed to be discovered later.

Police also found a plastic bag containing crushed peanuts.

The bag carried traces of the same chocolate used in Lily’s dessert.

Michael had prepared a backup.

If Evelyn failed to switch the plates, he could contaminate Lily’s food himself.

I felt physically sick.

This was no longer a plan to exploit an accident.

They had created the medical emergency.

They knew Lily might die.

Collins opened another case.

Inside were copies of life insurance applications.

Evelyn had attempted to purchase a two-million-dollar policy on Lily.

The application was rejected because Evelyn was not her legal guardian.

The rejection occurred two weeks before the custody petition was prepared.

If Evelyn became guardian, she could apply again.

Michael was listed as secondary beneficiary.

My daughter had become more valuable to them as a risk than as a person.

Police found a prepaid phone beneath the documents.

The device contained messages between Michael and Evelyn.

EVELYN: Daniel must appear negligent in public.

MICHAEL: The luncheon has doctors and board members.

EVELYN: Make sure the medicine is unavailable.

MICHAEL: What if Lily reacts faster than expected?

EVELYN: Malcolm says there will be time.

The name Malcolm appeared several times.

Dr. Malcolm Reeves was Evelyn’s personal physician.

He also sat on the board of her charity foundation.

He attended the luncheon.

He had been standing less than twenty feet from Lily when she stopped breathing.

Yet he never approached the table.

He never offered medical assistance.

Instead, he told two donors that I had failed to carry Lily’s medication.

The misinformation spread before the ambulance arrived.

Collins contacted his clinic.

Dr. Reeves had canceled his appointments and left the city.

His involvement explained how Evelyn believed she could control the medical narrative.

A respected physician would testify that Lily’s reaction resulted from parental negligence.

Michael would testify that I regularly forgot medication.

Evelyn would present herself as the responsible grandmother.

The judge would remove me.

The trust would open.

Police traced the prepaid phone’s last communication.

Michael had called Dr. Reeves forty minutes after leaving my house.

The signal came from a private airfield outside the city.

A charter plane left shortly afterward.

The passenger manifest listed only Dr. Reeves.

Security footage showed two men boarding.

One was Michael.

The plane was headed to Colorado.

Then it disappeared from public tracking.
