Chapter 14 - THE EMPTY SCHOOL BUS
I called the school principal before sunrise.
Classes were canceled.
Police surrounded the building.
Leonard Pike never arrived.
His phone was found beneath a seat on an empty school bus.
The bus had been parked overnight.
The signal was a distraction.
While police focused on the school, someone entered the hospital evidence facility.
The intruder used a stolen security badge.
He attempted to access Lily’s smartwatch.
The watch contained the original recording of Evelyn.
Cloud copies existed.
The criminal case would survive without the device.
But Evelyn needed the physical watch destroyed because her fingerprints were on the clasp.
The emergency-room threat had been captured after Evelyn adjusted the band on Lily’s wrist.
Those prints placed her inside the room and contradicted her claim that the recording had been fabricated elsewhere.
The intruder failed to open the evidence locker.
Security officers arrested him.
It was Leonard.
He agreed to cooperate within hours.
Evelyn had ordered the backyard break-in.
She instructed Leonard to frighten us.
The scarf and ladder were meant to make me appear paranoid if I reported an intruder no camera could clearly identify.
When the alarm activated successfully, Evelyn changed the plan.
She told Leonard to create a school threat and use the distraction to destroy the watch.
Leonard also revealed that Evelyn intended to flee.
A private aircraft waited at a small airfield.
She planned to leave after the next custody hearing.
Her electronic monitor had been copied.
A duplicate device would remain inside her home while she escaped.
Federal agents moved toward the airfield.
Detective Collins drove to Evelyn’s house.
The electronic signal showed her inside.
No one answered the door.
Officers entered.
A mannequin lay beneath a blanket in her bedroom.
The tracking device was strapped around its ankle.
Evelyn had already left.
A neighbor’s camera showed her entering a delivery van before dawn.
The van belonged to the hospital.
Dr. Reeves had arranged access before his arrest.
The vehicle was later found near the river.
Inside were Evelyn’s shoes, passport photographs, and a court file containing Lily’s testimony transcript.
She had read every word.
On the final page, beside Lily’s sentence, Dad didn’t forget me, Evelyn had written:
HE WILL.
Detective Collins interpreted it as a threat.
I understood it as Evelyn’s deepest belief.
She thought every person could be made unreliable.
Every memory could be replaced.
Every relationship could be exhausted until loyalty shifted.
She had done it to Michael.
She had tried to do it to Anna.
She had nearly done it to Lily.
The airfield’s security camera captured Evelyn entering a hangar.
No plane departed.
A maintenance worker saw her leave in a silver sedan with a man.
The man was not Leonard.
He was Judge Robert Lang.
The same judge who had granted Evelyn bail.
The same judge scheduled to hear her renewed custody petition.
