Chapter 4 - My Husband Called the Police

We were halfway back to Rachel’s apartment when two patrol cars pulled into the parking lot behind us.
Rachel met me downstairs.
Her face went pale when she saw the uniforms.
“Claire?”
“It’s okay.”
I hoped I was right.
One officer approached while the second stayed near the vehicles.
“Mrs. Bennett?”
“Yes.”
“We received a report concerning a domestic incident last night.”
“From my husband?”
“I can’t discuss the reporting party yet.”
Of course it was Evan.
The officer looked toward Mia.
“Is this your daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Are you willing to speak with us?”
“Yes.”
Laura had already instructed me to cooperate without volunteering unnecessary details.
So I gave them facts.
Birthday banquet.
Diane slapped Mia.
I reacted.
I left.
The officer asked, “Did you strike your husband?”
“Yes.”
Rachel looked at me sharply.
I continued.
“After his mother struck our two-year-old daughter and he did nothing.”
“Did you push Mrs. Bennett?”
“Yes.”
“Into a cake?”
“Yes.”
The younger officer almost reacted.
He caught himself.
“Do you have any evidence concerning the child being struck?”
I handed him my phone.
The full video played.
Neither officer spoke.
When it reached Diane’s question—
“Did you get it?”
—the older officer looked at me.
Then came the discussion about the custody filing.
By the end, the younger officer’s expression had changed completely.
“Can you send us a copy?”
“Yes.”
“We’ll need the original file from the person who recorded it too.”
“Sophie will provide it.”
The older officer crouched several feet from Mia.
“Hey, kiddo.”
Mia held my leg.
He didn’t move closer.
“That’s a nice bunny.”
She was carrying the stuffed rabbit Rachel had given her.
Mia whispered, “Bunny safe.”
The officer looked up at me.
Something in his face softened.
Then a black SUV turned into the parking lot.
Evan.
He got out before the vehicle fully stopped.
“There she is.”
The younger officer raised a hand.
“Sir, stay where you are.”
“That’s my daughter.”
“And we need you to remain there.”
Evan looked at me.
The fury in his face had nothing to do with concern.
“You called the cops?”
I almost smiled.
“You did.”
His expression shifted.
Then he saw Mia.
For one second, I thought instinct might finally win.
That he might ask if she was okay.
Instead, he pointed at me.
“She assaulted me.”
The older officer stood.
“We’ve seen the video.”
Evan stopped.
“What video?”
That was the first moment I truly saw fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
I said nothing.
Evan looked from me to the officers.
Then to Rachel.
Then back to me.
“Sophie sent you something?”
I watched him realize that his cousin had betrayed the family.
The younger officer asked, “Mr. Bennett, were you aware your mother struck your daughter?”
Evan’s mouth opened.
He looked at Mia.
Then at me.
And made the worst possible choice.
“My mother barely touched her.”
Mia flinched at the sound of his voice.
Both officers noticed.
So did I.
The older officer took out his notebook.
“Mr. Bennett, I’m going to need you to start from the beginning.”
Evan glared at me.
And for the first time in our marriage, I didn’t feel afraid of his anger.
I felt curious.
May you like
Because I wondered how many lies he could tell before one of them finally buried him.
