Chapter 1 - The Whole Video

I stood alone in my friend Rachel’s hallway with the apartment lights dimmed behind me.

My daughter, Mia, was finally asleep in the guest room.

I put in my earbuds and opened the video.

At first, all I saw was the birthday table.

Diane sat at the center wearing the pearl necklace Evan had bought her with money he claimed we didn’t have for Mia’s preschool deposit.

My husband sat beside her.

I was on the opposite side of the table, cutting Mia’s food into small pieces.

Then I heard Diane’s voice.

“She still talks like that?”

Evan glanced toward Mia.

“She’s two, Mom.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Diane leaned closer to him.

“What did the pediatrician say?”

My stomach tightened.

I had never given Diane permission to know anything about Mia’s medical appointments.

Evan lowered his voice.

The phone recording the candles had captured him anyway.

“The pediatrician said she’s fine.”

Diane scoffed.

“She isn’t fine.”

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“If Claire keeps babying her, we’ll never have enough evidence.”

I stopped breathing.

Evidence.

Evan immediately looked toward Sophie, the cousin holding the phone.

“Can we not do this here?”

Diane smiled.

“You’re the one who said Claire loses control when anyone criticizes the child.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

The recording continued.

Diane began criticizing Mia’s speech.

Then her eating.

Then the way she held her spoon.

I remembered every word.

What I hadn’t remembered was my husband’s face.

He wasn’t embarrassed.

He wasn’t surprised.

He was watching me.

Waiting.

Then Mia reached for a strawberry from Diane’s plate.

Diane slapped her.

The sound cracked through my earbuds.

My daughter’s little head snapped sideways.

And before I lunged across the table, Evan did something I had missed completely in the chaos.

He smiled.

Not because he enjoyed seeing Mia hurt.

That would almost have been easier to understand.

He smiled because he had gotten what he wanted.

Me losing control.

The rest happened exactly as I remembered.

I slapped Evan.

His glasses landed in the stew.

I shoved Diane backward into the cake.

Then I grabbed Mia and left.

But the camera kept recording.

For another forty-three seconds.

Diane wiped frosting from her face and screamed, “Did you get it?”

Evan turned toward Sophie.

“Tell me you got all of it.”

Sophie lowered her phone.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

Evan stood.

“She assaulted both of us.”

“You let your mother hit a toddler.”

“That isn’t what people are going to remember.”

My skin went cold.

Diane pointed toward the door I had just disappeared through.

“Call Malcolm.”

Evan nodded.

“Tonight?”

“Tonight.”

Then Diane said the words that made me sit down on the hallway floor.

“Tell him we have the incident we needed for the custody filing.”

The video ended.

For several seconds, I stared at my reflection in the black screen.

My revenge had started before the banquet.

But apparently, so had theirs.

And now I knew exactly what they were trying to take from me.

Not the house.

Not the money.

May you like

Mia.
