Chapter 19 - Olivia Takes the Stand

When they called my name, I stood slowly.

My body had healed.

The scar remained.

So did everything it represented.

I took the oath.

I answered questions.

Not as Judge Carter.

As Olivia.

As a wife.

As a mother.

As the woman who had been lying in a hospital bed when another person decided she was too weak to defend her children.

The prosecutor showed me the private adoption agreement.

“Did you sign this?”

“No.”

“Did you authorize anyone to surrender your parental rights?”

“No.”

“Did you give Margaret Whitmore permission to remove Noah?”

“No.”

“Did you strike her?”

“No.”

Then the infant-monitor footage played.

I watched my own head snap sideways.

I heard someone behind me gasp.

Margaret did not react.

The defense attorney approached.

“Judge Carter, you are a powerful woman, correct?”

“In my courtroom, I have authority defined by law.”

“And outside it?”

“I’m subject to the same law as everyone else.”

“You expect this jury to believe you concealed your occupation from your husband’s family for years?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted them to decide who I was without being impressed or intimidated by a title.”

He glanced toward Margaret.

“And Mrs. Whitmore failed that test?”

The prosecutor objected.

The judge sustained.

The attorney changed direction.

“You dislike my client.”

I thought carefully.

“I dislike what she did.”

“Isn’t this prosecution revenge?”

“No.”

“What would revenge look like?”

I looked at the jury.

“Revenge would be me believing my pain entitled me to ignore the law.”

“I don’t believe that.”

“What do you want, then?”

This time I looked at Margaret.

“I want my children to grow up knowing that love does not give anyone ownership over another person.”

Margaret’s face tightened.

The defense attorney returned to his table.

My testimony ended.

Weeks later, the jury returned.

Guilty on nearly every major count connected to the hospital conspiracy and financial fraud.

The investigation into Charles’s death remained separate.

Margaret showed no emotion until the judge ordered her remanded.

Then she turned toward Ethan.

“After everything I did for you.”

He stared back.

“No.”

His voice was steady.

“After everything you did to us.”

For the first time, Margaret had no answer.

But as deputies led her away, Agent Park approached me.

Her expression told me the story was not finished.

“What happened?”

“We got the final analysis on Charles.”

Ethan joined us.

Park looked at him.

“The sedative didn’t enter his system accidentally.”

My heart tightened.

“What does that mean?”

May you like

She took a breath.

“It means prosecutors are preparing a homicide case.”
