Chapter 1 - The Forged Signature

Daniel Ruiz held the private adoption agreement beneath the fluorescent hospital light.
His expression had changed completely.
The calm professionalism in his face was still there, but something colder had settled behind his eyes.
“Judge Carter, I need you to tell me whether you authorized any adoption arrangement involving your son.”
“No.”
My answer came immediately.
“I never discussed adoption with anyone.”
Margaret tightened her grip around Noah.
“This is ridiculous.”
“He’s my grandson.”
Daniel looked at her.
“That does not give you legal custody.”
Margaret’s eyes flashed.
“You have no idea who my family is.”
“I know exactly where we are.”
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“And right now, you are holding an infant whose mother has ordered you to return him.”
Two officers moved toward her.
Margaret finally placed Noah into the bassinet.
His tiny face was red from crying.
Every instinct in me screamed to reach for him, but when I shifted forward, pain tore through my abdomen.
A nurse rushed to my side.
“Judge Carter, please don’t move.”
The stain beneath my surgical dressing had grown larger.
Daniel noticed it.
“Get the physician.”
One officer left immediately.
Margaret glanced toward the door.
Daniel caught the movement.
“You are not leaving.”
Her face hardened.
“I haven’t done anything.”
“You struck a postoperative patient.”
“She attacked me first.”
Daniel looked at the officers.
“Separate everyone.”
Margaret’s mouth fell open.
For the first time since entering my room, she realized that nobody was taking orders from her anymore.
One security officer collected the documents from the floor.
Another retrieved my phone.
Daniel handed it to me.
My fingers trembled as I unlocked the screen.
There were eleven missed calls.
All from Ethan.
Then another call came through.
ETHAN WHITMORE.
Margaret stared at the screen.
Her expression changed.
Not fear.
Warning.
Something about that look made me hesitate.
I answered.
“Olivia?”
Ethan sounded breathless.
“Thank God.”
I said nothing.
“Where’s my mother?”
I looked straight at Margaret.
“She’s here.”
There was a long silence.
Then Ethan whispered something that made every person near me disappear from my awareness.
“Olivia, whatever she showed you, don’t sign anything.”
My blood ran cold.
“You knew?”
“No.”
His answer came too quickly.
“Then why did you tell me not to sign?”
Another silence.
This one lasted longer.
Finally Ethan said, “Because Karen called me twenty minutes ago.”
I closed my eyes.
“What did she say?”
“She said Mom was taking Noah.”
Daniel slowly turned toward me.
Ethan continued.
“And she said there was nothing I could do to stop her.”
I looked down at the forged signature.
“That’s your name on the agreement.”
“I didn’t sign it.”
“Are you sure?”
“Olivia.”
His voice cracked.
“I swear to you.”
Margaret suddenly laughed.
A quiet, bitter sound.
“You really believe him?”
I stared at her.
She smiled.
May you like
Then she said the words that opened an entirely new wound.
“Ask your husband where he was yesterday afternoon.”
