PART 2 – The Name That Brought the Mansion to Silence

Emily never reached for the inheritance papers.

She simply stared at the attorney as if she hadn't heard him correctly.

The marble floor beneath her knees suddenly felt colder than ever.

The room remained frozen.

Margaret's wineglass stopped halfway to her lips.

Daniel slowly rose from his chair.

"I'm sorry..." he said cautiously. "Did you say my wife?"

The elderly attorney gave a respectful nod.

"Miss Emily Carter."

He opened the leather folder with practiced hands and removed several embossed documents.

"My name is William Henderson, senior partner of Henderson & Blake Estate Attorneys."

He glanced toward Emily with unmistakable warmth.

"We've spent twenty-six years searching for you."

Nobody breathed.

Margaret laughed first.

A short, sharp laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

She stood gracefully and adjusted the pearls around her neck.

"There must be some mistake."

She looked directly at the attorney.

"My daughter-in-law grew up in foster care."

"She owns nothing."

William calmly removed an old photograph from the folder.

It showed a smiling couple standing beside a newborn wrapped in a cream-colored blanket.

Emily felt her heartbeat stop.

The woman in the picture...

She knew that face.

Not because she remembered it.

Because she had dreamed about it for years.

"My parents..."

she whispered.

William nodded slowly.

"Elizabeth and Jonathan Ashford."

"The founders of Ashford Global Holdings."

Daniel frowned.

"Ashford..."

His face slowly drained of color.

"The Ashford family?"

William met his eyes.

"Yes."

"The Ashford family."

Margaret's smile vanished instantly.

Ashford Global.

One of the largest privately owned investment companies in America.

Hotels.

Banks.

Commercial real estate.

Technology.

Shipping.

A fortune estimated well beyond six hundred million dollars.

Emily shook her head.

"No..."

"I was told they died."

"They did."

William's expression softened.

"But not before arranging everything to protect you."

He handed Emily another document.

Twenty-six years earlier...

A devastating limousine accident had killed her parents.

The crash had been ruled an accident.

But before the investigation concluded...

Their infant daughter had disappeared.

Everyone believed she had died with her nanny.

She hadn't.

Someone had taken her.

Hidden her.

Raised her under another name.

For decades.

William looked around the dining room.

"The trustees finally completed the DNA verification last week."

"There is absolutely no doubt."

"You are Elizabeth Ashford's only surviving child."

Silence swallowed the mansion.

Margaret slowly looked down.

Toward the woman she had forced to eat from the floor.

Her lips parted.

May you like

For the first time in years...

She looked afraid.
