Chapter 6 - The Signature She Stole

I remembered April 14 clearly.

Frederick had been crying all night.

Amy was exhausted.

I had an important project meeting at seven in the morning.

Teresa arrived carrying coffee and a folder.

She told me my life insurance company needed updated beneficiary information.

I signed three pages while standing at the kitchen counter.

I trusted her.

That trust had become her weapon.

My attorney, Rachel Kim, examined the forged debt agreement.

“The signature is extremely close.”

She said.

“But there are differences.”

“Can we prove it?”

“Yes.”

“But more importantly, we need to determine whether they created other documents using signatures collected that day.”

Rachel ordered a forensic document specialist to review everything.

Then Detective Hill called.

Police had searched Teresa’s car after obtaining a warrant.

They found a flash drive hidden beneath the spare tire.

The drive contained photographs of my signed documents.

Dozens of them.

My signature had been isolated, resized, and placed onto several files.

One transferred partial ownership of my house.

Another created the fake debt to Gerald.

A third authorized Teresa to manage certain financial transactions.

But one file made Rachel stop speaking.

“What?”

I asked.

She turned her laptop toward me.

It was a draft petition.

The title read:

EMERGENCY CONSERVATORSHIP OF CONNOR JAMES BRADLEY.

Amy covered her mouth.

I read every line.

The petition claimed I had become mentally unstable after the birth of my son.

It claimed I made reckless business decisions.

It claimed Amy manipulated me.

And it requested temporary control of my personal finances.

The proposed conservator was Teresa Bradley.

“They were trying to have you declared incompetent.”

Amy whispered.

Rachel shook her head.

“They were preparing to.”

“They would need much more evidence.”

“But look at the attachments.”

There were written statements.

One from Betsy.

One from Mason.

One from Gerald.

Each described imaginary episodes in which I forgot appointments, became confused, or behaved irrationally.

Then I saw another name.

Dr. Patrick Nolan.

I didn’t know him.

Rachel searched the name.

He was a physician in Kentucky.

His attached statement claimed he had evaluated me privately.

I had never met him.

“This is bigger than your mother stealing paperwork.”

Rachel said.

“They were building a legal structure around you.”

For the first time, I understood their real objective.

They did not simply want my house.

They wanted control over anything carrying my name.

My property.

My company interest.

My accounts.

Maybe even decisions involving Frederick.

Then Rachel scrolled to the final page.

Under “Immediate Family Concerns,” there was a paragraph about Amy.

According to the document, Teresa intended to request that Amy be removed from our home because she posed a danger to our child.
