Chapter 13 - The Party Was a Trap

The police reconstructed what happened at my house before I arrived.
Teresa expected me to work until at least seven.
Amy was supposed to remain in the kitchen.
Frederick was sick.
Twenty relatives were present.
Alcohol was everywhere.
And several people had been encouraged to record videos.
Why?
Because Teresa planned to provoke Amy.
She wanted Amy exhausted, frightened, and angry.
Then she intended to film the reaction.
One video recovered from Betsy’s phone showed Teresa whispering before I arrived.
“Keep the camera ready.”
Another showed Betsy intentionally placing dirty dishes beside Amy after Amy asked to check Frederick’s temperature.
They wanted a breakdown.
They wanted Amy shouting.
Maybe throwing something.
Maybe trying to leave.
Anything they could later describe as unstable behavior.
But Amy never gave them what they wanted.
She kept working.
She protected Frederick.
She endured everything.
So Teresa escalated.
According to Mason, Teresa planned to accuse Amy of stealing birthday money from relatives.
A wallet containing $1,800 had already been planted in our bedroom.
Police found it during the original search.
I remembered the evidence bag.
At the time, I had no idea why it mattered.
Now I did.
If I had arrived three hours later, Teresa would have “discovered” the money.
Twenty relatives would have witnessed the accusation.
Videos would have been recorded.
Police might have been called.
Amy’s reputation would have been destroyed.
And while everyone focused on her, Mason was supposed to remove my property documents.
My unexpected arrival ruined the sequence.
The cake in my hand.
The pendant.
The dress.
I had thought I was surprising my family.
Instead, I interrupted a carefully staged trap.
Amy sat silently when Rachel explained everything.
Then she asked one question.
“Was my phone in Teresa’s purse when police arrested her?”
Hill checked the inventory.
It wasn’t.
Amy looked at me.
“She took it that morning.”
“Then where is it?”
Nobody knew.
Her phone contained years of private messages.
Photos.
Passwords.
Personal notes.
And access to our shared cloud account.
We changed every password immediately.
But three days later, I received an alert.
Someone had attempted to restore Amy’s phone backup from another device.
The location was a motel outside Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Police arrived after midnight.
The room was empty.
But the clerk recognized the man who had rented it.
Gerald Pike.
Security footage showed Gerald leaving less than an hour before officers arrived.
He was carrying two bags.

And he wasn’t alone.
Walking beside him was Dr. Patrick Nolan.
