Chapter 4: A Different Kind of Wealth

Months passed.

Daniel accepted a management position at a smaller company.

The paycheck wasn't enormous.

The apartment wasn't luxurious.

Their furniture came from secondhand stores.

But every evening, the three of them ate together around one wooden table.

No servants.

No guests pretending not to notice cruelty.

Just family.

One Friday afternoon Noah came home carrying a drawing from school.

Three stick figures stood beside a little blue house.

Above them he had written:

"My Safe Place."

Daniel felt his throat tighten.

"Who's this?" he asked.

Noah pointed proudly.

"That's Mommy."

"And this?"

"You."

"And me?"

"No..."

Noah smiled.

"That's our home."

Daniel realized the child hadn't drawn a building.

He had drawn people.

That same week Margaret appeared unexpectedly outside the apartment.

She looked older.

Smaller.

The confidence that once filled every room had faded.

"I came to see my grandson."

Daniel stepped outside, quietly closing the door behind him.

"You should have thought about him before."

"I made mistakes."

"You made choices."

She lowered her eyes.

"I was trying to protect our family's reputation."

Daniel answered softly.

"No."

"You protected your pride."

"And lost your family."

For the first time in her life...

Margaret had no reply.

She walked away alone.
