Chapter 2: The Door That Closed Forever

The front door closed with a soft click.

It wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

For Daniel, that single sound ended thirty-five years of trying to earn his mother's approval.

Emily walked beside him without saying a word, her fingers trembling around Noah's tiny hand. The evening air felt strangely cold after the warmth of the mansion's chandeliers. Behind them, laughter slowly returned inside the house, as if nothing had happened.

Daniel looked back only once.

Through the tall dining room windows, he saw Margaret calmly carving the turkey while her guests resumed eating.

His own family had disappeared from her world in less than a minute.

"So that's all we were," he whispered.

Emily squeezed his arm.

"No," she said quietly. "That's all we were to her."

They spent the night in a modest hotel across town.

No luxury.

No servants.

No marble floors.

Just a clean room with two beds and a tiny kitchenette.

For the first time in months, Noah ate dinner sitting at a table.

He smiled as he dipped grilled cheese into tomato soup.

"Dad..."

Daniel looked up.

"Can I sit here every night?"

The question hit harder than any insult his mother had ever thrown at him.

He forced a smile.

"You'll never eat on the floor again."

Around midnight his phone buzzed.

Mother.

He ignored it.

Another call.

Then another.

Finally, a text.

You embarrassed me in front of everyone. Come home immediately.

Daniel stared at the screen before typing only six words.

My family is already home.

He blocked her number.

May you like

For the first time in his life...

He slept peacefully.
