Chapter 4: The Letter Inside the Dress

Later that evening, Mr. Hawthorne asked to examine the remaining pieces.
As conservators carefully collected every fragment, something slipped from a hidden lining.
A tiny sealed envelope.
No one had known it was there.
Inside rested a handwritten letter dated 1824.
It told the story of a young orphan girl who had been welcomed into a noble household—not because of her bloodline, but because of her kindness and courage.
At the bottom, one sentence stood out.
"A family's honor is measured not by birth, but by the love it offers those with the least."
Mr. Hawthorne smiled through tears.
"That message survived two centuries."
He looked toward Lily.
"And today, it found exactly the right little girl."
Lily smiled for the first time since the dress had been torn.
She gently squeezed my hand.
"I think the dress wanted us to read it."

I kissed her forehead.
"I think you're right."
