Chapter 2: The Truth About Lily

Vivian refused to believe it.

"This is ridiculous!"

"You people are trying to trick me!"

She pointed at me.

"She's nothing but a single mother looking for money."

Before I could answer, another voice echoed across the courtyard.

"That is enough."

My fiancé, Edward, stepped forward.

For the first time since the weekend had begun, he wasn't standing beside his family.

He was standing beside me.

"You've insulted Emma long enough."

"You've insulted Lily even more."

Vivian folded her arms.

"Oh really?"

"So tell everyone whose child she is."

Edward smiled sadly.

"I will."

He knelt beside Lily.

"This little girl isn't my burden."

"She's my greatest blessing."

Gasps spread through the crowd.

He looked directly at every guest.

"I met Emma after Lily's father died while rescuing people during a flood."

"She raised Lily completely alone."

"She never asked anyone for money."

"She worked three jobs."

"And she still volunteered every weekend."

He turned toward his aunt.

"You called her a gold digger."

"But she refused my first proposal because she didn't want anyone to think she married me for my family's wealth."

Vivian's face turned pale.

The guests who had quietly judged me all afternoon suddenly looked ashamed.

Several lowered their phones.

Others quietly deleted their recordings.

Because they had captured something very different from what they had expected.
