Chapter 3 – The Truth No One Knew

Morning sunlight spilled across the private hospital suite.

Clare woke to unfamiliar stillness.

No luxury penthouse.

No marble floors.

Only white walls and the steady rhythm of a heart monitor.

Her father sat beside the window reading financial reports.

He looked up immediately.

"Morning."

She tried to smile.

"I suppose you've already taken over everything."

Richard almost laughed.

"I've done nothing."

She raised an eyebrow.

"You've done plenty."

"I simply stopped protecting him."

Two FBI agents entered later that afternoon.

Not because of Richard.

Because hospital staff had documented every injury.

Every bruise.

Every photograph.

Every statement.

The evidence spoke for itself.

One agent laid several photographs across the table.

"Mrs. Hayes..."

"We also discovered financial irregularities involving NexusCore."

Clare blinked.

"What kind?"

The younger agent exchanged a glance with his partner.

"Millions of dollars routed through shell companies."

She stared.

Matthew had always insisted she stay away from accounting.

He claimed she deserved "a peaceful life."

Now she understood why.

Across town...

Matthew walked into the emergency board meeting expecting support.

Instead...

Every chair was occupied except his.

The board chairman slid a folder across the table.

Inside were bank records.

False invoices.

Personal expenses hidden as corporate acquisitions.

Payments to Lauren's consulting company totaling nearly eighteen million dollars.

Matthew looked around.

"Who gave you these?"

No one answered.

Finally...

The chairman spoke.

"You did."

Matthew frowned.

"What?"

"You signed every document."

By evening...

Federal investigators entered NexusCore headquarters.

Computers were imaged.

Servers secured.

Executives questioned.

Lauren disappeared before sunset.

Matthew called her twelve times.

She never answered.

She had already boarded a flight to Switzerland.

Without him.

That night, Clare stood beside the hospital window watching the city lights.

"I thought I ruined my life."

Richard joined her.

"No."

"You trusted the wrong person."

"There's a difference."

May you like

For the first time in years...

She believed him.
