Chapter 2 – The Empire Begins to Crack

The first thing Clare noticed wasn't the sirens.

It was silence.

The kind that settled over a room after someone finally believed you.

She remained on the marble floor, clutching her phone as if it were the only thing anchoring her to reality. Her father's steady voice never left the line.

"I'm here."

Three simple words.

Seven years disappeared between them.

Outside the penthouse, Manhattan continued its endless rhythm, yellow taxis weaving through midnight traffic while thousands of strangers hurried home without knowing an empire was about to fracture.

Exactly eight minutes after the call, three black SUVs stopped outside the building.

Matthew had always loved expensive security.

He simply forgot whose security company protected the building.

When Richard Sterling's convoy arrived, every guard recognized the name before they recognized the face.

The elevator was already waiting.

Clare barely remembered the front door opening.

She remembered polished shoes crossing broken glass.

A heavy coat falling over her shoulders.

Then her father kneeling beside her.

Richard Sterling looked older than she remembered.

His silver hair had thinned.

Lines framed his eyes.

But his expression...

She had seen it only once before.

The day a hostile corporation tried to bankrupt Sterling Capital.

He reached for her hand.

His fingers stopped.

Purple bruises covered her wrist.

He didn't ask another question.

Instead, he stood.

"Henderson."

The former Marine beside him stepped forward.

"Yes, sir."

"No one leaves this building."

The paramedics arrived seconds later.

While they worked, Richard quietly picked up the antique cane lying beside the sofa.

Blood still marked the polished wood.

He handed it to Henderson.

"Bag it."

No anger.

No shouting.

Only evidence.

Meanwhile...

Across town...

Matthew sat inside a private lounge overlooking Central Park.

Lauren laughed as champagne filled crystal glasses.

"You finally handled her?"

Matthew smirked.

"She needed to understand who makes the rules."

His phone buzzed.

He ignored it.

Another notification.

Then another.

By the tenth vibration, even Lauren noticed.

"Aren't you going to answer?"

Matthew glanced down.

The smile faded.

Chief Financial Officer.

General Counsel.

Board Chairman.

Three missed calls.

His stomach tightened.

The next call came from the head of compliance.

"Matthew."

"What?"

"Where are you?"

"Dinner."

"You need to come in."

"Tomorrow."

"No."

A pause.

"Now."

Something in the man's voice felt unfamiliar.

Fear.

"We've received emergency legal notices."

Matthew frowned.

"What notices?"

"Sterling Capital has frozen every credit facility backing NexusCore."

His smile disappeared.

"That's impossible."

"It already happened."

Within five minutes...

The company's revolving credit line vanished.

Their acquisition financing disappeared.

International wire transfers froze.

The investment bank postponed the IPO roadshow indefinitely.

Two directors resigned.

The lead institutional investor demanded an emergency meeting before sunrise.

Matthew stared at his phone.

"This has to be a mistake."

Across the city...

Richard Sterling ended the call with his legal team.

"I never asked you to destroy his company."

"No, sir."

"I asked you to remove our support."

There was a difference.

For seven years, Richard had quietly honored every financial guarantee Clare had secretly signed before marrying Matthew.

Not because he trusted Matthew.

Because he loved his daughter.

Tonight...

Those guarantees no longer existed.

The empire wasn't being attacked.

It was collapsing under its own weight.
