Chapter 9 - Margaret’s Version of the Truth

Margaret appeared on television that evening.

She wore pale blue.

Soft makeup.

Pearl earrings.

Nothing about her looked like the woman who had screamed at Tessa to end the livestream.

She looked wounded.

Gentle.

Grandmotherly.

The reporter asked whether she had struck Maisie.

Margaret’s eyes filled with perfectly measured tears.

“I deeply regret touching my granddaughter’s face.”

Touching.

Not hitting.

Not slapping.

Touching.

“She was having a severe tantrum,” Margaret continued.

“I reacted in a way I wish I could take back.”

Then she looked directly into the camera.

“But what happened afterward terrified me.”

A photograph appeared.

Evan’s reddened cheek.

My handprint was faintly visible.

I felt ashamed.

I had hit him.

Three times.

I would not pretend otherwise.

Margaret continued.

“My son was assaulted repeatedly.”

“My granddaughter was removed from her home.”

“Our family has been denied access.”

“And as a mother and grandmother, I could not remain silent.”

The reporter mentioned my name.

Margaret shook her head sadly.

“I love Rachel.”

That almost made me throw the remote.

“I believe she is overwhelmed.”

“There have been concerns for some time.”

“What concerns?”

“I don’t want to discuss her private health.”

There it was.

A suggestion without evidence.

A shadow shaped like an accusation.

Social media did the rest.

Some people supported me.

Others did not.

COMMENTS:

Three slaps is assault.

Why didn’t she just grab the child and leave?

Both women sound unstable.

Poor husband.

Poor baby caught between two crazy women.

Then someone uploaded a twelve-second clip.

It began with me striking Evan.

It did not show Margaret hitting Maisie.

It did not show his refusal to intervene.

It did not show anything before my first slap.

The edited clip spread rapidly.

By midnight, strangers were calling me an abuser.

At 12:17, Tessa came downstairs holding her laptop.

“I know who posted it.”

“Who?”

“Cousin Marla.”

One of Margaret’s closest nieces.

Tessa showed me a family group chat.

Margaret had instructed relatives to share the edited clip.

MAKE SURE PEOPLE SEE WHAT RACHEL DID.

DO NOT SHARE THE FULL VIDEO.

IT CONTAINS PRIVATE FAMILY CONVERSATIONS.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

From Evan.

STOP.

The group went silent.

Margaret replied.

EXCUSE ME?

Evan wrote:

POST THE FULL VIDEO OR POST NOTHING.

I read it twice.

Tessa looked at me.

“Maybe he’s finally waking up.”

I did not answer.

Then Margaret responded.

YOU NEED TO REMEMBER WHO SAVED YOU.

Evan:

I REMEMBER EVERYTHING.

Margaret:

THEN REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED THE LAST TIME YOU DEFIED ME.

Evan did not reply.

Tessa went pale.

“What?”

I asked.

She was staring at the message.

“What happened the last time?”

“I don’t know.”

“Tessa.”

“I really don’t.”

Then her phone rang.

Evan.

She answered.

His first words came through the speaker.

“Tess, do you still have the recording from the hospital?”

Tessa froze.

“What recording?”

May you like

“The night Dad died.”
