Chapter 1 - The Camera Was Still Recording

For several seconds after my last words, nobody moved.

Evan stood beside the dining table with one hand pressed against his cheek.

His glasses floated crookedly in the mushroom soup.

Margaret still had Maisie in her arms.

My daughter was crying so hard she could barely catch her breath.

That sound pulled me back into my body.

I crossed the remaining distance between us and reached for her.

“Give me my daughter.”

Margaret tightened her grip.

“You’ve lost your mind.”

“Give her to me.”

“You just assaulted my son three times.”

“And you hit a two-year-old.”

“She needed discipline.”

Maisie screamed louder.

That ended the argument.

I reached beneath her arms and pulled her against my chest.

Margaret resisted for half a second.

Then Tessa spoke from across the room.

“Mom.”

Her voice sounded strange.

Thin.

Terrified.

Margaret turned.

Tessa was staring at her phone.

The phone that had been livestreaming the birthday dinner.

“What?” Margaret snapped.

Tessa swallowed.

“The stream is still live.”

Everything changed.

Margaret’s face emptied.

Evan slowly lowered his hand from his cheek.

I looked toward the phone.

A red LIVE symbol glowed in the corner of the screen.

Underneath it, comments were moving so quickly I could barely read them.

WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

DID SHE HIT THAT BABY?

SOMEONE CALL RACHEL.

IS MAISIE OKAY?

OH MY GOD.

My name was Rachel.

Apparently half of Margaret’s extended family had just watched her slap my daughter.

And they had watched Evan do nothing.

Margaret lunged toward Tessa.

“Turn it off.”

Tessa stepped backward.

“Mom—”

“TURN IT OFF!”

That shout went out live too.

Tessa’s thumb finally hit the screen.

The red symbol disappeared.

The room fell silent again.

But it was a different silence now.

The first silence had belonged to Margaret.

This one belonged to the truth.

Margaret looked around the table.

“Everyone saw what Rachel did.”

Nobody answered.

“She attacked Evan.”

Still nobody answered.

Margaret pointed at me.

“She is dangerous.”

Maisie buried her wet face against my neck.

I could feel her tiny heart racing through her dress.

I picked up her diaper bag from beside the booster seat.

Evan finally moved.

“Rachel, don’t leave like this.”

I stared at him.

“Like what?”

“Angry.”

I almost laughed.

“You think anger is the problem?”

“I think we should calm down before you do something you regret.”

His mother had struck our daughter.

And he was warning me about regret.

I grabbed Maisie’s coat.

Then Tessa suddenly stepped toward me.

“Rachel.”

Margaret’s eyes flashed.

“Tessa, stay out of this.”

Tessa ignored her.

She slipped something into the outside pocket of Maisie’s diaper bag.

Her phone.

I frowned.

Tessa leaned closer.

“I saved the livestream before I ended it.”

Margaret went completely still.

“Tessa.”

Tessa looked at her mother.

For perhaps the first time in her thirty years of life, she did not immediately look away.

“Everything is on it.”

Margaret’s voice dropped.

“You delete that.”

“No.”

Evan stared at his sister.

“Tess.”

“No.”

Margaret took one step toward her.

Tessa lifted her chin.

“You hit Maisie.”

Margaret gave a cold laugh.

“Oh, please.”

“You hit her.”

“She threw soup all over me.”

“She’s two.”

“She needs to learn.”

Tessa’s eyes filled with tears.

Then she said something that made Evan stop breathing.

“So did I, right?”

Margaret’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Evan saw it too.

“Tessa,” he whispered.

Tessa wiped a tear from her cheek.

“You always said I needed to learn.”

Margaret snapped her head toward her daughter.

“That has nothing to do with tonight.”

My stomach tightened.

I looked from Tessa to Evan.

“What is she talking about?”

Evan would not meet my eyes.

Tessa did.

And the shame in her expression told me the answer was older than my marriage.

Much older.

“Go home, Rachel,” she whispered.

“Take Maisie.”

“And when you get there, watch the video from the beginning.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

Tessa glanced at her brother.

May you like

“Because the slap isn’t the first important thing the camera recorded tonight.”
