Chapter 3 - I PRETENDED NOT TO NOTICE

Rebecca hugged me carefully.

I did not hug her back.

She noticed.

Of course she did.

Rebecca noticed everything.

“How is Noah?”

“Stable.”

“Thank God.”

She sounded relieved.

Maybe she was.

That was the problem.

If she was the woman on Daniel’s phone, she was either an extraordinary actress or even more dangerous than I understood.

Detective Ortiz watched from the corner.

Rebecca placed her briefcase beside the chair.

“Daniel has been arrested?”

“Yes.”

I answered.

She lowered her eyes.

“I warned you about him.”

That surprised me.

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“You told me he was ambitious.”

“I was trying to be diplomatic.”

I stared at her.

“You attended my wedding.”

“You were in love.”

“That has never stopped you from giving legal advice.”

For one second, irritation crossed her face.

Then it disappeared.

“Emma, tonight is not the time.”

“When is the time?”

She sighed.

“After Noah is safe.”

The scratch on her wrist remained visible.

I looked away from it deliberately.

If she was guilty, I wanted her comfortable.

People reveal more when they believe they are still trusted.

Rebecca opened her briefcase.

“I brought the trust documents.”

Detective Ortiz stepped closer.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel has apparently been discussing them.”

Rebecca looked offended.

“As trustee counsel, I have obligations.”

“Who told you what Daniel discussed?”

Silence.

Only half a second.

But I saw it.

Rebecca smiled.

“I assume investigators found documents.”

Ortiz said nothing.

Rebecca turned toward me.

“Your father created a complicated succession structure.”

“If something happens to you, Noah becomes primary.”

“And if something happens to Noah first?”

Rebecca’s eyes sharpened.

“Why are you asking?”

“Answer.”

She hesitated.

“If Noah dies before you, his contingent interest returns to the primary trust.”

“And then?”

“If you later die while married, Daniel receives limited control for probate administration.”

“Limited?”

“Very.”

“For how long?”

Rebecca closed the folder.

“This is not a useful conversation while you’re medicated.”

I was not heavily medicated.

She knew that.

I leaned toward her.

“Who becomes controlling trustee after Daniel?”

Her face became still.

I finally understood.

Rebecca Shaw.

My father had named her as emergency professional trustee if no direct descendant could serve.

She had drafted the language herself.

The order mattered because Noah dying first prevented his descendants from taking priority.

My death second gave Daniel temporary access.

Daniel’s death afterward would trigger the professional trustee provision.

Rebecca.

Three deaths.

In order.

The woman on the phone had said exactly that.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

Rebecca stood.

“I should let you rest.”

“Rebecca.”

She stopped.

“My father trusted you.”

Something changed in her eyes.

“I know.”

Then she walked out.

Detective Ortiz waited five seconds before following.

I looked toward the hospital window.

For the first time, I understood the size of the plan.

My husband was not planning to kill his wife and child for insurance money alone.

Someone had designed a legal staircase.

Noah.

Me.

Daniel.

Three deaths.

May you like

One trust.

And Rebecca Shaw waiting at the bottom.
