Chapter 19 - DANIEL’S LAST REQUEST

Daniel was sentenced before the others.
He had cooperated.
That mattered.
It did not erase what he did.
Before sentencing, I gave a statement.
I did not describe him as a monster.
Monsters are easy.
Daniel was harder.
He was a husband who once slept beside me when my mother died.
A father who built Lego castles with Noah.
A man who knew our favorite songs.
And still made choices that could have killed us.
That was the truth I wanted the court to understand.
Danger does not always arrive looking cruel.
Sometimes it kisses you goodnight.
Sometimes it remembers your birthday.
Sometimes it convinces itself that one terrible act will solve everything.
When I finished, Daniel asked the judge for permission to address me.
The judge allowed it.
Daniel turned.
“Emma.”
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.”
I said nothing.
“I know that isn’t enough.”
He swallowed.
“I kept thinking I would stop before anything happened.”
“But every time Victoria gave me another step, I told myself it was temporary.”
His voice broke.
“Then dinner came.”
“And I knew.”
“I knew exactly what I had become.”
I remembered pretending to be unconscious.
Hearing him whisper.
Soon they’ll both be gone.
“You knew before dinner.”
I said.
He lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
That mattered.
No last-minute awakening.
No excuse.
He chose.
Then he asked.
“Will you tell Noah I loved him?”
I thought about the question.
“I will tell Noah the truth.”
Daniel began crying.
“That includes that you loved him.”
He looked up.
“And it includes what you did.”
I would not make my son carry a fake father.
Neither saint nor monster.
Just truth.
After sentencing, Daniel requested one final thing.
“Can I know whether he’s okay?”
I looked at him.
“He is.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
I walked away.
Outside, Noah waited with Rebecca and Detective Ortiz.
He ran toward me holding two slices of pizza in a cardboard box.
“You said pizza.”
May you like
I laughed.
For the first time in months, the sound did not hurt.
