CHAPTER 3: THE WOMAN WHO RETURNED

At exactly 11:57 p.m., the revolving doors opened.

Every employee in the lobby looked up.

Evelyn walked inside.

The same woman security had escorted out less than an hour earlier.

Except this time...

No one stopped her.

Instead every department manager stood.

Then every concierge.

Every receptionist.

Every housekeeper nearby.

Richard Lawson took one step forward.

Then bowed his head.

"Welcome home, Ms. Carter."

The words echoed through the marble lobby.

Guests turned.

Phones appeared.

Someone whispered,

"Did he say... owner?"

Marcus rushed toward her.

"Evelyn..."

She didn't even look at him.

Richard handed her a leather folder.

"The emergency resolutions have been signed."

She opened it calmly.

Resolution One.

Marcus Hale was removed as Chief Executive Officer.

Resolution Two.

All executive authority transferred immediately.

Resolution Three.

Marcus's company shares were frozen pending forensic investigation.

Marcus's face turned white.

"You can't do this."

Evelyn finally met his eyes.

"I already did."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"There has to be some mistake."

Evelyn looked at the sapphire brooch pinned to Vanessa's robe.

"My mother's brooch."

Vanessa instinctively covered it.

Evelyn smiled.

"I'd like it back."

Without another word, the Security Chief approached Vanessa.

His voice remained perfectly professional.

"Ma'am..."

"I'll need you to remove property belonging to Ms. Carter."

Vanessa's hands shook.

For the first time all night...

May you like

She realized she had never been replacing the wife.

She had been trespassing in the owner's home.
