CHAPTER 2: THE MIDNIGHT REVERSAL

Marcus didn't notice the first change.
Why would he?
He was standing in the presidential suite, pouring champagne into crystal glasses while Vanessa admired herself in the floor-to-ceiling windows.
"You look incredible wearing that robe," Marcus said with a grin.
Vanessa smiled.
"I know. It suits me better than it ever suited her."
Neither of them noticed the blinking notification on Marcus's phone.
URGENT BOARD MEETING.
He ignored it.
Another message arrived.
Attendance mandatory. Effective immediately.
Marcus frowned.
"What kind of emergency happens at eleven thirty at night?"
Before he could answer himself, someone knocked.
Not politely.
Three firm knocks.
Marcus opened the suite door.
Standing outside was General Manager Richard Lawson.
Behind him stood the head of hotel security.
Two attorneys.
And six members of the executive board.
Richard looked strangely pale.
"Mr. Hale..."
Marcus smiled.
"Good. Tell security to make sure my wife doesn't come back."
Nobody moved.
Nobody answered.
Instead Richard cleared his throat.
"Sir... we've received new ownership directives."
Marcus laughed.
"From who?"
One of the attorneys stepped forward.
"From Carter Holdings."
Marcus blinked.
"What does that have to do with us?"
The attorney slowly removed a thick folder.
Inside were property deeds.
Corporate trust agreements.
Original ownership certificates.
Every page carried the same family name.
Carter.
Marcus frowned.
"No..."
Richard looked down.
"I'm afraid the hotel has never belonged to Hale Hospitality."
Silence.
"It belongs to the Carter Family Trust."
Marcus stared at him.
"That's impossible."
"It isn't."
The attorney opened another file.
"You've served as Chief Executive Officer."
He paused.
"But ownership remained under Mrs. Evelyn Carter through the family trust."
Vanessa's champagne glass slipped from her fingers.
It shattered across the marble floor.
Marcus suddenly couldn't breathe.
"...Evelyn?"
The attorney nodded.
May you like
"For eleven years."
Everything Marcus believed about his empire cracked in a single sentence.
