Chapter 17 - The Trial
Grant and Conrad went to trial together.
Vanessa testified for the prosecution.
She wore a simple dark suit.
No stilettos.
No champagne.
She admitted everything.
Her cruelty toward Lily.
The affair.
The financial transfers.
The surveillance.
Her contact with North Star.
Grant’s attorney attacked her credibility.
He called her jealous.
Vindictive.
Criminal.
All true in some form.
Then the prosecutor asked one question.
“Did Grant Carlisle ever tell you to stop frightening Lily?”
Vanessa looked toward him.
“No.”
“Did he ever tell you not to search for Evelyn’s government phone?”
“No.”
“Did he know you contacted Cole Rainer?”
“Yes.”
“Did he know Rainer was connected to his father-in-law’s illegal freight network?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Then.
“Yes.”
Grant closed his eyes.
I testified next.
His attorney asked about my work.
“How many nights were you away from your daughter in the year before your deployment?”
I answered.
He listed every trip.
Every late return.
Every weekend training.
The strategy was clear.
Bad mother.
Career woman.
Absent wife.
Then he asked.
“Would you agree your job repeatedly came before your family?”
“No.”
“You left for eight weeks.”
“To perform a federal assignment my husband agreed to support.”
“You could have refused.”
“Yes.”
“So you chose the assignment.”
“Yes.”
He smiled as though he had won.
I continued.
“And Grant chose to abuse the trust I placed in him while I was gone.”
His smile disappeared.
He asked about the morning I returned.
“You were armed?”
“My service weapon was secured in my duffel.”
“You were trained in physical force?”
“Yes.”
“You approached Vanessa aggressively?”
“No.”
“You moved toward her.”
“To remove her shoe from my daughter’s hand.”
The prosecutor later showed the hospital photographs.
The defense stopped asking whether I overreacted.
Then Caleb played the camera footage.
Lily crying.
Vanessa demanding information.
