Chapter 5 - JULIAN’S FIRST LIE

By sunset, the assault video was in police custody.
By eight o’clock, Julian was lying publicly.
His attorney released a statement.
MR. VANCE DENIES INTENTIONALLY STRIKING HIS WIFE.
THE INCIDENT OCCURRED DURING A HIGHLY EMOTIONAL FAMILY CONFRONTATION.
MRS. VANCE LOST HER BALANCE AFTER MOVING TOWARD MR. VANCE.
Julian regretted that statement less than thirty minutes later.
Because the security footage showed everything.
I stood near the gift table.
I told him to leave.
He stepped toward me.
His right arm moved.
His fist struck my abdomen.
I folded.
I hit the table.
I fell.
There was no ambiguity.
No camera angle to explain away.
No accidental contact.
No aggressive movement from me.
The video also captured Beatrice clapping afterward.
Nina watched it once.
Then she looked at me.
“I am going to enjoy cross-examining every person who signed that declaration.”
I was at Rachel’s house.
Her guest bedroom smelled like lavender detergent.
My hospital discharge paperwork sat beside me.
I had orders to rest.
I was failing.
“Who is still claiming I fell?”
“Julian.”
“Anyone else?”
“Arthur’s attorney says the footage is incomplete.”
“It shows the entire room.”
“Facts are irritating when they interfere with strategy.”
I looked at the copy of Julian’s petition.
Beatrice described me as volatile.
Arthur described me as financially obsessive.
Three guests described me as shouting.
None mentioned Julian’s fist.
Nina tapped the pages.
“They filed this before the video was reviewed.”
“So?”
“So now they have sworn statements contradicted by objective evidence.”
I looked at her.
“Perjury?”
“Potentially.”
“Will anything happen?”
“I prefer not to promise consequences.”
I nodded.
I was learning that justice moved more slowly than rage.
Mara called around nine.
“We interviewed Beatrice.”
I sat straighter.
“She confessed?”
Mara laughed softly.
“No.”
“What did she say?”
“That Chloe manipulated everyone.”
“Of course.”
“She claims she believed Chloe was pregnant.”
“But Chloe says Beatrice designed the lie.”
“Yes.”
“Who has evidence?”
“Chloe has messages.”
My pulse jumped.
“What kind?”
Mara read one.
BEATRICE: DO NOT OVERDO THE STOMACH TOUCHING.
YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE EARLY.
Another.
BEATRICE: JULIAN BELIEVES YOU.
KEEP IT SIMPLE.
Another.
BEATRICE: ARTHUR WANTS THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT SIGNED BEFORE CLARA DELIVERS.
I stared at the wall.
There it was.
Arthur.
Not implied.
Named.
Mara continued.
“Arthur’s lawyers dispute authenticity.”
“Of course.”
“Forensics will verify.”
“What did Julian sign?”
“We’re still locating the document.”
“Nina is searching trust filings.”
“Good.”
I closed my eyes.
“Mara, did Julian know my reaction was being staged?”
“Chloe says yes.”
“Do you have proof?”
“One text.”
I waited.
JULIAN: SHE’LL LOSE IT WHEN SHE SEES YOU.
CHLOE: AND YOUR MOM WANTS THAT?
JULIAN: MOM WANTS PEOPLE TO SEE WHO CLARA REALLY IS.
I felt something in me die quietly.
Not love.
That had been dying for months.
Respect.
Whatever tiny part of me still believed Julian had merely become weak and selfish disappeared.
He had brought his mistress to my baby shower intending to provoke me before witnesses.
The fist had been spontaneous.
The humiliation had not.
“What did Chloe reply?”
I asked.
Mara read.
CHLOE: THIS FEELS MESSED UP.
JULIAN: YOU WANTED ME TO CHOOSE YOU.
Rachel stared at me.
I looked down.
There was another message.
CHLOE: WHAT IF SHE DOESN’T REACT?
JULIAN: SHE WILL.
But I had reacted.
I told them to leave.
That was all.
No screaming.
No throwing things.
No attack.
So Julian created the reaction himself.
With his fist.
Rachel whispered.
“He wanted evidence you were unstable.”
“Yes.”
“And instead he made evidence against himself.”
“Yes.”
For the first time that day, I smiled.
It did not last.
Nina called.
“I found the acknowledgment.”
My stomach dropped.
“He signed it?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three days ago.”
“Before the shower.”
“Yes.”
“Who is listed?”
“A child referred to as Baby Bennett-Vance.”
My mouth went dry.
“Control?”
“Julian is named father.”
“Chloe mother.”
“Arthur temporary legacy trustee.”
“And me?”
“Not mentioned.”
I closed my eyes.
My husband had signed documents recognizing a fake unborn baby with his mistress as a Vance heir three days before bringing her into my baby shower.
“Can they enforce it?”
“Not if there is no pregnancy.”
“Then what happens?”
“Fraud investigation.”
“Trust litigation.”
“Potential false filing.”
“Who notarized it?”
Nina became quiet.
“Arthur’s personal lawyer.”
Of course.
I looked toward the dark window.
Julian had spent years telling me his family did not need to break rules because they wrote them.
Now I understood what he meant.
They wrote documents.
They created narratives.
They found compliant witnesses.
They made lies look official.
Then they waited for ordinary people to become too exhausted to challenge them.
I was tired.
But I was not ordinary anymore.
Not because of money.
Because I finally understood the machinery.
Nina continued.
“There is another problem.”
“What?”
“The document references a medical certification.”
My heart tightened.
“What certification?”
“That Chloe is pregnant.”
I stared at her.
“She isn’t.”
“I know.”
“Who signed it?”
“A physician named Dr. Randall Pierce.”
I knew the name.
He ran the private fertility clinic Beatrice used for years.
I whispered.
“He certified a pregnancy that does not exist.”
“Yes.”
“Could he lose his license?”
“If it is fraudulent, that may be the least of his problems.”
I looked at Rachel.
“This is bigger.”
She nodded.
It was.
Because if Arthur could convince a physician to certify a fake pregnancy for trust control, what else had the Vances been buying with money?
The answer arrived the next morning.
Mara called at 6:14.
“We opened one encrypted drive.”
I sat up.
“What did you find?”
“Payments.”
“To Pierce?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Three hundred forty thousand over four years.”
I stared into the darkness.
“For what?”
“Consulting.”
I almost laughed.
“Everyone consults for Arthur.”
“There’s more.”
“What?”
“Dr. Pierce signed medical certifications in two other Vance trust disputes.”
My skin prickled.
“Fraudulent?”
“We’re checking.”
Mara paused.
“And Clara?”
“Yes?”
“We found your name on his payment schedule.”
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“Tell me exactly what it says.”
Mara read.
C. VANCE IVF STATUS — REPORT TO B.V.
I could barely breathe.
May you like
Beatrice had not merely obtained my records from Julian.
A doctor may have been reporting my fertility treatment directly to her.
