Chapter 10 - BEATRICE’S PURSE

Beatrice had searched my purse before.

Years ago.

Back then she laughed when I caught her.

“I was looking for lipstick.”

I believed her.

That was the problem with people like Beatrice.

They trained everyone around them to treat violations as personality.

She was intrusive.

Dramatic.

Old-fashioned.

Controlling.

Never dangerous.

Never criminal.

Until the day the behaviors finally connected.

Dean Mercer signed his cooperation agreement.

Then he told investigators exactly what Beatrice planned.

During the baby shower confrontation, she was supposed to enter the guest bedroom where purses and coats were stored.

Mine was expected to be there.

She would take my safe-deposit key.

Dean would later retrieve the contents before I realized it was missing.

The problem was simple.

I had kept my purse with me.

Years of quietly gathering evidence had taught me that.

So when I fell, my purse slid beneath the gift table.

Beatrice never got it.

Instead, federal agents arrived.

Mara showed me footage.

Beatrice moved toward the gift table at 2:01.

Not toward me.

Toward my purse.

An FBI agent entered before she reached it.

She stopped instantly.

Watching the video made my skin crawl.

Her pregnant daughter-in-law was on the floor after being punched by her son.

And Beatrice’s first instinct had been to retrieve a key.

Nina filed the footage in family court.

The protective order expanded.

Julian was barred from direct contact.

Beatrice too.

Arthur’s attorneys objected.

Judge Shaw denied the request within hours.

Then investigators searched Beatrice’s private sitting room.

They found copies of my medical records.

Photographs from Dean.

Draft affidavits describing me as unstable.

A list of potential witnesses.

Several names were marked.

RELIABLE.

Three belonged to guests from the shower.

The same three who signed declarations.

Nina stared at the list.

“This is witness preparation.”

“Or witness coaching.”

I asked.

“Can you prove payment?”

“Not yet.”

Mara eventually did.

One board member received a consulting contract.

His wife’s charity received a donation.

Arthur’s attorney had already been paid for unrelated work.

Nobody handed them an envelope labeled LIE FOR US.

Arthur’s world was more sophisticated than that.

Favors moved.

Access opened.

People understood what gratitude required.

Then the company started shaking.

Vance Meridian’s lenders froze several credit facilities.

Two directors resigned.

A major government contractor suspended new business.

Employees began calling hotlines.

More records surfaced.

A purchasing manager reported fake bids.

A controller described invoices approved without documentation.

A former vice president said Arthur kept two accounting systems.

Mara’s investigation multiplied.

What began with my documents became dozens of witnesses.

Arthur had spent years believing loyalty was permanent.

It turned out loyalty often lasted exactly until the first subpoena.

Michael Trent finally handed over his private archive.

It contained seventeen years of records.

Mara called me.

“You were right about one thing.”

“What?”

“He put the first ledger where you would find it.”

I stared at her.

“Why?”

“He needed an outsider.”

“I was his boss’s daughter-in-law.”

“Exactly.”

“That is not an outsider.”

“You were outside company power.”

I thought about it.

Michael could not go to Arthur.

He did not trust Julian.

He feared the board.

But he knew I had forensic accounting experience.

So he put the folder somewhere I might see.

Then he gave me the cryptic warning.

“You used me.”

I said when I eventually met him under supervision.

Michael looked exhausted.

“I gave you a door.”

“You knew Arthur was watching me.”

“Not then.”

“You accepted two million dollars.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To convince him I was loyal.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone in your world has a noble explanation for taking dirty money.”

Michael looked down.

“That is fair.”

“Were you planning to keep it?”

“Yes.”

At least he was honest.

“Then do not call it strategy.”

“No.”

“Call it what it was.”

“Cowardice.”

I nodded.

“Better.”

Michael’s records revealed the structure.

Arthur had used shell vendors to inflate contracts.

The excess moved through consulting firms.

Some went offshore.

Some funded political donations through intermediaries.

Some paid private expenses.

Some financed Beatrice’s foundation.

Some went to Julian’s strategy company.

I stared at that last section.

“How much did Julian receive?”

Mara answered.

“Roughly five-point-six million over four years.”

“For actual work?”

“Some.”

“How much cannot be explained?”

“Approximately three million.”

I felt numb.

The affair suddenly seemed almost simple compared with everything else.

Julian had not merely protected his father.

He profited.

“Did he know?”

“That is the question.”

Michael claimed yes.

Julian claimed no.

Emails gave no easy answer.

Then one surfaced.

ARTHUR: MOVE THE CONSULTING SPREAD THROUGH JVS.

JULIAN: HOW MUCH?

ARTHUR: 600 THIS QUARTER.

JULIAN: SAME DESCRIPTION?

ARTHUR: STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT.

JULIAN: UNDERSTOOD.

I read it three times.

“Six hundred means six hundred thousand?”

“Yes.”

“He knew.”

“It strongly suggests knowledge.”

Julian’s attorney issued another statement.

Routine corporate accounting language was being misinterpreted.

Mara laughed when she read it.

“Apparently crime becomes routine if you put it in a spreadsheet.”

Then Chloe asked to see me.

I refused.

She asked again.

I refused.

The third request came through Nina.

“She says it concerns Julian.”

“Everything concerns Julian.”

“She says it concerns the punch.”

I looked up.

“What about it?”

“She says there is something she has not told investigators.”

I became still.

“What?”

“She will only tell you in person.”

“No.”

Nina nodded.

“I agree.”

“Tell her to tell Mara.”

“She refuses.”

I almost dismissed it.

Then Nina added.

“She says Julian did not lose control.”

My heartbeat changed.

May you like

“What does she mean?”

“She says before the shower, he told her exactly what he would do if you refused to cooperate.”
