Chapter 18 - THE FALSE VICTORY

Victoria’s public statement collapsed within hours.

Her claim that she had protected me could not survive the video.

Other women came forward.

A former Bennett employee.

A housekeeper.

A bookkeeper.

Melissa Grant.

Even one of Victoria’s former assistants.

Each person held a small piece.

Together, the pieces formed a system.

Money had purchased silence.

Reputation had discouraged questions.

Doctors had been selected carefully.

Friends had been manipulated.

Documents had been manufactured.

The Bennetts hadn’t created one lie.

They had created an environment where lies could survive.

A warrant was issued for Victoria.

Dominic was taken back into custody after prosecutors argued that his cooperation did not erase the danger he posed.

For the first time, I slept six uninterrupted hours.

Then Chloe called at dawn.

“We found Victoria.”

“Where?”

“A hotel in White Plains.”

“Is she arrested?”

“She was gone before officers arrived.”

My hope disappeared.

“But she left something.”

“What?”

“A list.”

The list contained eleven names.

Potential witnesses.

Mine was first.

Rachel second.

Arthur third.

Lauren fourth.

Erin fifth.

Beside each name was an address.

Some were current.

Some were old.

Beside my name were two letters.

PG.

Chloe didn’t know what they meant.

Neither did I.

Then Erin walked into the room carrying coffee.

She saw the photograph of the list.

Her face changed.

“What?”

“PG.”

She put the cups down.

“Claire, Dominic used that abbreviation.”

“When?”

“Last Thanksgiving.”

My heart sped up.

“What did it mean?”

“Parking garage.”

I stared at Chloe.

Then I remembered Dominic smiling at me outside the courthouse.

He had been released on bond that day.

He knew where I parked during hearings.

Chloe immediately contacted courthouse security.

They searched the garage.

On Level Three, directly above the space I had used twice, officers found a prepaid phone taped beneath a concrete barrier.

It contained only one video.

Recorded yesterday.

Dominic entering the garage.

Before he was returned to custody.

He walked toward the camera.

Looked directly into it.

And said,

“If my mother goes down, Claire goes down first.”

The timestamp showed the video had been recorded forty-three minutes before Dominic surrendered to prosecutors.

His cooperation had never been surrender.

It had been positioning.

He wanted Victoria punished.

But he still blamed me for destroying the life they had built together.

Chloe looked at me.

“He may have left something else here.”

Officers searched for two hours.

Then they found it.

A second phone.

One unsent message.

Addressed to Victoria.

TOMORROW.
