Chapter 17 - THE COUNTERATTACK

Arthur survived.
Smoke inhalation.
A fractured wrist.
A deep cut above his eyebrow.
He told police Victoria had followed him to the warehouse.
She tried to stop him from removing the records.
They struggled.
She fled when he triggered the fire alarm.
The fire destroyed part of the building.
Not all of it.
Investigators recovered three metal document cases.
Inside were original contracts.
Bank records.
Private investigator invoices.
Medical payments.
Forged signatures.
And handwritten instructions in Victoria’s own notebooks.
The case shifted overnight.
Federal investigators joined the financial prosecution.
Emergency orders froze additional accounts.
Lauren’s money was protected.
Most of Erin’s account was recovered.
More than two million dollars from my trust was traced to reachable assets.
It wasn’t everything.
But for the first time, Victoria was losing faster than she could move.
Then Dominic requested a meeting with prosecutors.
He wanted a deal.
He offered evidence against his mother.
When Chloe told me, I felt rage rise inside me.
“He hurt me.”
“I know.”
“He doesn’t get to become a victim because she betrayed him.”
“He isn’t.”
“Then why give him anything?”
“Because accountability isn’t the same as revenge.”
I hated that answer.
But I understood it.
Dominic provided passwords.
Locations.
Names.
He admitted participating in financial fraud.
He admitted monitoring me.
He admitted assaulting Rachel.
And eventually, he admitted what happened in the kitchen.
No accident.
No misunderstanding.
No ruined steak.
He had wanted me afraid.
The confession strengthened the criminal case.
Then Chloe asked where Victoria would go.
Dominic gave one answer.
“My grandfather’s cabin.”
Police searched it.
Empty.
But a laptop had been left behind.
On it was a draft email addressed to several reporters.
Victoria planned to portray herself as the whistleblower.
She intended to claim Dominic had manipulated everyone.
Arthur.
Rachel.
Me.
Even her.
Attached was a prepared statement.
I read one sentence three times.
I loved Claire like a daughter and repeatedly tried to protect her.
My hands started shaking.
Rachel touched my shoulder.
“She did the same thing to me.”
“What?”
“Made herself the rescuer after helping create the danger.”
I looked at the screen.
Then I noticed the email had a scheduled delivery time.
8:00 a.m.
Tomorrow.
Chloe checked the laptop.
“We can stop it.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“Let her send it.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m done defending myself in whispers.”
That night, with my attorney beside me, I released one thing publicly.
Not my private messages.
Not my medical history.
The kitchen video.
All of it.
Dominic’s hand around my wrist.
Victoria stepping over me.
Arthur sitting in silence.
And me pressing the hidden switch.
May you like
By midnight, nobody was asking whether I had misunderstood what happened.
They were asking how many people had helped hide it.
