Chapter 7 - WHAT ELSE DID I ACCEPT?

After Detective Ross left, I could not stop thinking.

Not about the mall.

About the years before the mall.

Small moments began returning.

Travis deciding I did not need my own car because we could “save money.”

Deborah criticizing every doctor I chose.

Harold telling me wives created problems when they involved their parents.

Travis becoming angry when I discussed our marriage with friends.

Deborah calling me selfish when I wanted my mother in the delivery room.

None of those moments had seemed enormous individually.

Together they formed something I could finally see.

A cage did not need metal bars.

Sometimes it was built one concession at a time.

Angela returned that afternoon.

She helped me contact an attorney.

Her name was Rebecca Shaw.

She specialized in family law.

Rebecca spoke to me by video call from her office.

“I’m not going to tell you what decision to make about your marriage.”

“I already made it.”

That surprised even me.

She paused.

“What decision?”

“I want a divorce.”

The words filled the room.

For the first time, they did not scare me.

Rebecca nodded.

“Then we need to protect you and the children.”

“What can Travis do?”

“He is their father.”

“Yes.”

“But that does not automatically mean unrestricted access under these circumstances.”

She explained emergency custody orders.

Protective orders.

Temporary possession of the home.

Financial restraints.

My head spun.

“Can he take the babies?”

“Not tonight.”

Rebecca’s voice was firm.

“We’ll file before you’re discharged.”

That evening, another message reached me through an unknown number.

It was Deborah.

You are destroying my son’s life because you couldn’t wait three hours.

I stared at the screen.

Then another arrived.

Women have given birth at home for thousands of years.

Stop pretending you almost died.

A third message followed.

If the police get involved, everyone will know what kind of wife you are.

I took screenshots.

I forwarded them to Rebecca.

Then I forwarded them to Detective Ross.

For years, Deborah’s messages had frightened me.

That night, they became evidence.
