Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE WAS NEVER HOME

I was discharged without my son.
Walking out of the hospital with Sophie while Caleb remained inside felt unnatural.
Every instinct told me both babies belonged in my arms.
But Dr. Patel promised Caleb was improving.
My parents took me to their house.
I did not return to the home I had shared with Travis.
Rebecca arranged for me to retrieve belongings later with a police escort.
Two days after discharge, I went back.
The broken front door had been replaced.
The living room had been professionally cleaned.
The sofa was gone.
Travis had bought a new one.
That made me furious.
He had erased the physical evidence of the worst day of my life as though furniture had been the problem.
A police officer waited by the entrance while I packed.
I went upstairs.
My hospital bag was still in the nursery.
Untouched.
Inside were newborn outfits.
Phone chargers.
A robe.
Snacks.
Two tiny hats I had bought months earlier.
I sat on the floor and cried.
Then I opened Travis’s desk drawer.
I was only looking for our marriage certificate.
Instead, I found a folder.
My name was written across the front.
Inside were bank statements.
Insurance documents.
A copy of my passport.
And paperwork showing Travis had moved nearly twenty-eight thousand dollars from our joint savings account into an account solely in his name.
The transfers had begun four months earlier.
My hands went cold.
I photographed everything.
Then I found the insurance envelope.
My new card had been opened.
The card itself was gone.
Underneath it was a sticky note in Travis’s handwriting.
Keep until after delivery.
I stared at those four words.
Why?
Why would my husband deliberately hide my insurance card until after I gave birth?
Rebecca’s answer came quickly.
“Financial control.”
“But insurance?”
“He may have wanted to control the hospital.”
“How?”
“By making you believe you couldn’t access care without him.”
I looked around the nursery.
Two cribs.
Two rocking bassinets.
A painted sign saying LOVE LIVES HERE.
I suddenly hated it.
May you like
Love had never lived there.
Control had.
