Chapter 7 - THE MAN INSIDE MORETTI’S HOUSE

The ledger implicated someone within Vincent’s organization.

The original code name was V.M.-2.

For years, everyone assumed it referred to Vincent’s late uncle, Vittorio Moretti.

Rosa discovered a recent transfer using the same code.

Vittorio had been dead for eleven years.

Someone else had inherited the identity.

Vincent ordered an internal audit.

He did not tell me details.

I did not ask.

Then one of his attorneys disappeared.

Gabriel Moretti was Vincent’s cousin and legal adviser.

He handled legitimate property holdings, restaurant licenses, and defense accounts.

He also had access to confidential meetings with federal authorities.

Ruiz learned that someone had warned Gerald before every planned search.

The leak came from Vincent’s side.

Gabriel returned two days later.

He claimed he had been visiting a sick relative.

Vincent did not confront him violently.

He invited him to dinner.

Federal agents placed recording equipment inside the room with Vincent’s consent.

The decision shocked everyone familiar with the Moretti name.

Vincent was allowing law enforcement into his home.

At dinner, he mentioned a false plan to move the original ledger through a warehouse in Queens.

Within twenty minutes, Gerald contacted a private security team.

The leak was confirmed.

Gabriel had been selling information to the Coles for years.

He also knew my father survived under a new identity.

He told Gerald where Anthony worked.

My father died in a supposed robbery when I was twelve.

No one was arrested.

The crime had never been random.

Gabriel had traded my father’s location for protection inside the Moretti organization.

Vincent listened to the recorded confession alone first.

Then he asked whether I wanted to hear it.

I said yes.

Gabriel’s voice came through the speaker.

Anthony should have destroyed the ledger.

Gerald only wanted the book.

The idiot fought back.

My father died protecting evidence I did not know existed.

I walked out of the room.

Vincent followed but remained several feet away.

“I am sorry.”

“Your family killed him.”

“Gabriel gave the location.”

“The men who attacked Anthony worked for Gerald.”

“Your family still created the danger.”

“Yes.”

He did not ask me to separate him from them.

That mattered.

“What will happen to Gabriel?”

“He will be arrested.”

“Not punished by you?”

“He deserves a public record.”

“Why?”

“Because fear disappears when crimes become rumors.”

“Accountability requires names.”

Vincent Moretti had spent his life benefiting from silence.

Now he was choosing exposure.

Federal agents arrested Gabriel.

His cooperation connected Gerald to my father’s murder, judicial bribery, and financial crimes.

It also exposed illegal Moretti operations.

Vincent surrendered records involving his own organization.

Several of his men were arrested.

His businesses faced seizure.

I stared at him when I learned.

“You knew this would happen.”

“Yes.”

“You may lose everything.”

“Not everything.”

The words sounded personal.

I stepped back.

“Do not make me the reason.”

“You are not.”

“My father should have done this years ago.”

“I am doing it because silence has already cost too much.”

Vincent’s organization divided.

Some men supported him.

Others called him a traitor.

A senior captain named Carlo Santi disappeared with weapons and cash.

He believed Vincent had destroyed the Moretti family for a waitress.

Carlo contacted Gerald Cole.

Two wounded empires formed an alliance.

May you like

Their first target was not Vincent.

It was me.
