Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING WITHOUT A DEBT

Vincent proposed three years after his release.

He did not hide the ring inside food.

He did not ask in front of customers.

He placed a small box on my kitchen table.

Then he sat across from me.

“I would like to marry you.”

“You sound as though you are proposing a business merger.”

“I am nervous.”

“I thought Vincent Moretti did not become nervous.”

“That man was exhausting.”

I opened the box.

The ring was simple.

A small red stone sat inside a black metal band.

It resembled my father’s pendant.

“Did you copy this?”

“Rosa helped.”

“She cannot keep secrets.”

“She kept the ledger secret for twenty-three years.”

“Fair point.”

I did not answer immediately.

The next morning, I said yes.

Our wedding took place inside Anthony’s Table on a Sunday.

Ruth officiated after becoming legally certified online.

Rosa stood beside me.

Detective Ruiz attended in civilian clothes.

Several former Moretti men were absent because they remained incarcerated.

Vincent did not pretend the empty seats represented tragedy without cause.

Choices had consequences.

The vows were short.

I did not promise obedience.

Vincent did not promise protection from every danger.

We promised truth before appearance.

Questions before assumptions.

Distance when anger made closeness unsafe.

We promised neither person would control money, work, friendships, or medical decisions.

Ruth cleared her throat.

“Are you two getting married or negotiating a lease?”

“Both,” I said.

Everyone laughed.

After dinner, Vincent handed me a black business card.

The original had been stained with my blood and collected as evidence.

This card carried both our names.

The back contained new words.

If you ever need help, call.

The number belonged to the diner’s survivor-support fund.

We had created it for employees and local residents facing domestic violence.

Emergency transportation.

Temporary housing.

Legal consultations.

Medical costs.

The card did not promise a Mafia boss would arrive in eight minutes.

It promised a network would answer.

No one person should become another person’s only path to safety.

That lesson had taken us years to understand.
