CHAPTER 3 — The Mistress Talks

At dawn, the police arrived.
Adrian was no longer shouting.
Vanessa was.
She blamed Adrian first. Then Emily. Then Jonathan. Then the lawyers. She claimed she had been manipulated, threatened, dragged into everything.
But when investigators placed the fake invoices in front of her, her confidence cracked.
Because the signatures were hers.
The offshore transfers were hers.
The consulting agency was hers.
And the messages proving she had planned to provoke Emily were hers too.
One message destroyed her completely.
Make him punish her hard enough that she leaves. Then I get the house.
Emily read it once.
Then placed the phone down.
She had expected cruelty.
But seeing it written so casually still hurt.
Adrian sat across the room, handcuffed now, staring at Vanessa like she was a stranger.
“You said she was unstable,” he whispered.
Vanessa snapped back, “And you believed me because you wanted to.”
That sentence landed harder than any confession.
Emily looked at Adrian.
For months, she had wondered how Vanessa had destroyed her marriage so easily.
Now she knew.
Vanessa had not created Adrian’s cruelty.
She had only invited it out.
Jonathan stood beside Emily’s hospital bed hours later while doctors treated her injuries. His face remained controlled, but his hands shook when he adjusted her blanket.
“I should have taken you home sooner,” he said.
Emily closed her eyes.
“I needed him to show the world who he was.”
“He could have killed you.”
“I know.”
Jonathan sat down beside her.
For the first time, the billionaire looked old.
Emily reached for his hand.
“But he didn’t win.”
Outside the hospital room, cameras waited. Reporters filled the lobby. The fall of Adrian Vale had become national news.
But Emily did not care about headlines.
She cared about one thing.
Tomorrow, she would walk into court.
Not as Adrian’s wife.
Not as Vanessa’s victim.
May you like
As Emily Sterling.
The woman they should have feared from the beginning.
