CHAPTER 1 — Five Minutes Later

For five seconds after Emily ended the call, nobody moved.
Adrian still stood above her with the arrogance of a man who believed money could erase cruelty. Vanessa’s champagne glass hovered near her lips, but her hand had begun to tremble.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
He looked down, irritated.
One missed call.
Then another.
Then ten.
His screen lit up with names he never ignored.
Chief Financial Officer.
Bank Director.
Board Chairman.
Legal Counsel.
Private Security.
Adrian frowned. “What did you do?”
Emily slowly pushed herself up from the marble floor. Pain cut through her body, but she refused to collapse in front of him.
“I did nothing,” she said softly. “You did everything.”
Adrian answered the call.
His face changed before he spoke.
“What do you mean the accounts are frozen?”
Vanessa sat upright.
Adrian stepped away from Emily, his voice rising. “No. That’s impossible. Those are corporate reserves.”
A pause.
Then his face lost color.
“All of them?”
Emily touched the diamond pendant around her neck.
The tiny recorder inside had captured every word. Every threat. Every strike. Every laugh from Vanessa.
Vanessa noticed the gesture.
Her eyes locked on the pendant.
“What is that?” she whispered.
Emily looked at her.
“The one thing you forgot to steal.”
Outside, headlights swept across the estate windows.
One car.
Then three.
Then a convoy.
Black SUVs rolled through the gates Adrian had believed were locked. Men in dark suits stepped out first. Then lawyers. Then private security.
And finally—
A silver-haired man in a long black coat stepped into the chandelier light.
Jonathan Sterling.
Emily’s father.
The billionaire Adrian had mocked as a retired accountant.
Adrian stared as if he had seen a ghost.
Jonathan walked into the ballroom without raising his voice.
But every person in the room felt the temperature drop.
He looked at his daughter first.
Then at Adrian.
“You touched my child,” he said calmly. “Now I touch everything you own.”
Adrian swallowed.
“Mr. Sterling… I didn’t know—”
May you like
Jonathan’s eyes hardened.
“That is exactly why you are finished.”
