Chapter Four: Cracks in the Story

Vanessa Cole had never liked silence.
The Mercer townhouse had been filled with it since Grant left for the emergency board meeting. Marian paced the kitchen, checking her phone every few minutes, while Paige insisted everything would be fine.
"Grant always lands on his feet," Paige said, pouring herself another cup of coffee. "He's probably charming the new director right now."
Vanessa forced a smile but said nothing.
She had spent the entire morning staring at the wedding photograph still lying face down on the side table.
She never intended to become the other woman.
What began as late-night strategy meetings had slowly turned into dinners, weekend trips, and promises Grant insisted he would keep.
"I'm only staying with Evelyn until the timing is right."
She had believed him.
Now she wasn't so sure.
Her phone buzzed.
The message came from Grant.
Emergency. Don't answer unknown numbers. Delete every message between us.
Her pulse quickened.
Another text arrived seconds later.
If anyone asks about the accident, tell them we were driving home from a client dinner. Don't change your story.
She stared at the screen.
Don't change your story.
Not the truth.
Your story.
Before she could think further, the doorbell rang.
Marian opened the door without hesitation.
Two people stood outside.
A woman in a navy suit displayed an identification badge.
"Good morning. I'm Rebecca Lawson from Hart Global Holdings' Corporate Compliance Division."
Beside her stood a middle-aged man carrying a locked document case.
"We're here to collect company-owned electronic devices currently assigned to Ms. Vanessa Cole."
Marian frowned.
"This is a private residence."
"It is," Rebecca replied politely. "However, the laptop, tablet, and company phone issued to Ms. Cole remain corporate property. They are subject to an active financial investigation."
Paige stepped forward.
"You need a warrant."
Rebecca calmly handed over a signed authorization.
"We have one."
Vanessa's hands began to shake.
Her company laptop was upstairs.
So were hundreds of messages.
Travel itineraries.
Expense reports.
Hotel reservations.
Some had been deleted.
Many had not.
Rebecca looked directly at her.
"Ms. Cole, if there is anything you wish to disclose voluntarily, this is the appropriate time."
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
For weeks, Grant had assured her everything was under control.
Now investigators were standing in the house.
His authority was gone.
His confidence had vanished.
And for the first time since the accident, she wondered whether he had been protecting her—
Or simply protecting himself.
As Rebecca's team carried the electronics toward the front door, Vanessa noticed something she had overlooked before.
The security camera above the entrance was blinking.
Recording.
Every conversation.
Every visitor.
Every lie told inside the house since the night Evelyn walked away.

Somewhere, she realized, there was already another witness.
And cameras never forgot.
