Chapter Three: The Audit Begins

The silence inside the boardroom stretched until it became unbearable.
Grant forced a smile.
"There has to be some misunderstanding."
"No," Evelyn replied calmly. "There isn't."
She pressed a button on the remote.
The first slide filled the screen.
Unauthorized Executive Expenditures — $3.8 Million
Every transaction had been highlighted in yellow.
Dates.
Amounts.
Approvals.
Electronic signatures.
All led to one person.
Grant Mercer.
Chief Financial Officer Daniel Brooks adjusted his glasses, reading each page with growing disbelief.
"I've... never seen these reports."
"You weren't supposed to," Evelyn answered. "Several payments were routed through consulting subsidiaries that bypassed your department."
A murmur spread around the table.
Grant pushed back his chair.
"Those were strategic investments."
"Were they?"
Another click.
Photographs appeared.
Luxury resorts in Aspen.
Private villas in the Caribbean.
Five-star hotels in Paris.
Designer boutiques along Rodeo Drive.
Each expense was paired with the company's corporate credit account.
The dates matched weekends when Grant had claimed to be traveling for client negotiations.
Then another photograph appeared.
Grant and Vanessa.
Laughing together on the deck of a yacht.
The timestamp showed six months before her accident.
No one spoke.
Director Helen Crawford slowly folded her hands.
"So Ms. Cole wasn't simply an employee?"
Grant's face turned pale.
"My personal life isn't relevant."
"It became relevant," Evelyn said, "when company funds paid for it."
She clicked again.
Invoices covered the screen.
Luxury hotel suites.
Medical insurance upgrades.
Transportation services.
A downtown apartment leased under a shell corporation.
Every payment ultimately traced back to Mercer Technologies.
Grant looked around desperately.
"There are explanations."
"I'm listening."
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Because there was nothing to say.
Liam distributed another folder to each board member.
"Our forensic accountants completed their review yesterday."
The room filled with the sound of turning pages.
One director frowned.
Another removed his glasses.
A third whispered a quiet curse beneath his breath.
Daniel suddenly looked up.
"These transfers... they weren't just unauthorized."
He swallowed.
"They're fraudulent."
Grant slammed his palm against the table.
"I built this company!"
"No," Evelyn corrected.
"You inherited it."
The words landed harder than any accusation.
She stood, walking slowly around the conference table.
"For years, Mercer Technologies survived because talented employees worked harder than its leadership. They deserved integrity."
She stopped behind Grant's chair.
"They deserved honesty."
The board chairman finally broke his silence.
"Mr. Mercer..."
His voice was steady.
"Until this investigation concludes, you're relieved of all executive authority effective immediately."
Security officers waiting outside quietly opened the boardroom doors.
Grant looked from the guards to Evelyn.
For the first time since she had walked out of their townhouse, he understood something terrifying.
His wife had not come to destroy him.

She had simply decided to stop protecting him.
And that was far more dangerous.
