Chapter 7 – The Choice No Mother Should Ever Have to Make

Emma's cry pierced through the shattered silence.

For Catherine, nothing else mattered.

She pushed herself free from Michael's grasp and sprinted toward the staircase.

"Emma!"

"Catherine, wait!" Michael shouted.

But she was already halfway upstairs.

Glass crunched beneath her bare feet as she reached the nursery. Her hands trembled while she lifted Emma from the crib.

"It's okay," she whispered, tears streaming down her face. "Mommy's here."

Emma's tiny body shook with frightened sobs before slowly settling against Catherine's shoulder.

Rachel rushed into the room seconds later.

"Is she hurt?"

Catherine quickly checked every inch of her daughter.

No cuts.

No blood.

Just terrified.

Rachel let out a shaky breath.

"Thank God."

Downstairs, police sirens echoed through the neighborhood.

Within minutes, officers surrounded the house.

Crime scene investigators photographed the shattered windows while bomb technicians examined the remains of the device that had exploded on the front lawn.

It hadn't been a powerful bomb.

Just enough to send a message.

One detective approached Michael.

"Mr. Harrison?"

Michael nodded.

"We'll need a statement."

"I'll give you one."

The detective held up the black envelope.

"Do you recognize this?"

Michael's jaw tightened.

"No."

Inside the envelope was a single sheet of paper.

Typed.

No fingerprints.

No signature.

Only one sentence.

Return the drive before seventy-two hours are over.

Three black SUVs pulled quietly into the street.

Unlike the first one, these displayed discreet government plates.

Several men and women wearing dark jackets stepped out.

The lead agent showed his credentials to the local police.

Within minutes, the Philadelphia officers stepped aside.

The FBI had officially taken over.

A woman in her late forties entered the house.

She carried herself with quiet authority.

"Michael."

He looked up.

"Director Lawson."

She wasn't smiling.

"I hoped we'd never meet under these circumstances."

She turned toward Catherine.

"You must be Mrs. Harrison."

"Catherine Carter."

The woman nodded respectfully.

"I'm Special Agent Rebecca Lawson."

She glanced around the damaged living room.

"I think it's time everyone knew the truth."

An hour later, they gathered around the dining room table.

Emma slept peacefully in Rachel's arms upstairs.

Rebecca placed several classified folders on the table.

"Project Legacy began four years ago."

She opened the first file.

"It involved executives from Harrison Global Logistics laundering millions of dollars through fake shipping contracts."

Catherine looked at Michael.

"You knew."

He nodded.

"I discovered irregularities during an internal audit."

Rebecca continued.

"When Mr. Harrison reported the fraud..."

"...two senior executives disappeared."

"Disappeared?" Rachel asked.

Rebecca met her eyes.

"They were murdered."

The room went completely still.

Michael lowered his head.

"I was told I'd be next."

"So the FBI recruited you?" Catherine asked quietly.

Rebecca answered.

"He volunteered."

Michael looked at Catherine.

"I couldn't let them keep doing it."

Rebecca slid another photograph across the table.

Catherine stared at it.

Amber Collins.

Standing beside three unfamiliar men.

One face was circled in red.

"Who is he?"

Rebecca answered calmly.

"Victor Kane."

"The financial director?"

Rebecca shook her head.

"That's what everyone believes."

She paused.

"He's actually the man who built the entire criminal network."

Rachel frowned.

"And Amber?"

Rebecca sighed.

"She wasn't just Michael's assistant."

The next sentence changed everything.

"She has been working for Victor Kane for nearly six years."

Catherine felt sick.

"So..."

Amber had targeted Michael from the beginning.

Rebecca nodded.

"She was placed close to him to control him."

Michael closed his eyes.

"I thought I was using her."

Rebecca looked at him sadly.

"In reality..."

"...she was using you."

The room fell silent.

Finally Catherine spoke.

"The affair..."

She looked directly at Michael.

"Was any of it fake?"

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Because there was no answer that wouldn't hurt.

"No."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I wish I could tell you it was all an act."

"It wasn't."

"I crossed lines I should never have crossed."

Tears filled Catherine's eyes.

"So every time you kissed her..."

"You betrayed me."

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

Every word felt like another knife.

Rebecca quietly closed the folder.

"He made terrible personal decisions."

She looked at Catherine.

"But none of those decisions change the danger you're in now."

Later that night, Rebecca pulled Catherine aside.

"We have a safe house prepared."

"For me?"

"For you..."

She smiled gently.

"And Emma."

"What about Rachel?"

"If she stays with you, she comes too."

Catherine looked toward the living room where Michael stood alone, staring out the broken window.

"What about him?"

Rebecca's expression grew serious.

"He has to stay."

Catherine frowned.

"Why?"

"Because if he disappears now..."

"...Victor Kane will know we've recovered the evidence."

Michael overheard the conversation.

"I'll stay."

Rebecca looked at him.

"It may cost you your life."

He smiled sadly.

"I've already cost my family enough."

At dawn, two black SUVs quietly left the neighborhood.

One carried Catherine, Emma, Rachel, and Agent Lawson toward a secure government safe house outside Philadelphia.

Michael remained behind.

Standing alone in front of the damaged house.

Watching them disappear.

Catherine looked back through the rear window.

For a brief moment...

Their eyes met one last time.

Neither smiled.

Neither waved.

There were simply too many broken pieces between them.

Twenty minutes later, Michael's phone rang.

Unknown Number.

He answered immediately.

"Michael Harrison."

Victor Kane's calm voice came through the speaker.

"You've disappointed me."

Michael remained silent.

Victor chuckled.

"I suppose you've told your wife everything by now."

"What do you want?"

"The drive."

"You'll never get it."

Victor laughed again.

"I don't need the drive anymore."

Michael's blood ran cold.

"What do you mean?"

"You've already delivered me something much more valuable."

A long pause.

Then Victor spoke four chilling words.

"I know the safe house."

The call ended.

Michael's face drained of all color.

He immediately dialed Rebecca Lawson.

The line rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then—

A deafening explosion echoed through the phone.

The call went dead.

May you like

Michael whispered only one word.

"Catherine..."
