Chapter 6 – The Truth Michael Never Told

Darkness swallowed the office.

The hum of the computers vanished, replaced by the shrill wail of the security alarm.

For one long second, no one moved.

Then Ethan's voice cut through the silence.

"Nobody touch anything."

Emergency lights flickered to life, bathing the room in a dim red glow.

Daniel instinctively stepped in front of Catherine.

"Stay behind me."

Catherine tightened her hold on Emma's diaper bag. Rachel had insisted she leave Emma with her that afternoon, saying, "One crisis at a time." For the first time, Catherine was grateful she had listened.

Ethan hurried to a locked cabinet and pulled out a flashlight.

"My servers are backed up off-site," he said. "Even if they wiped these computers, they didn't erase the evidence."

Before anyone could respond, someone pounded on the front door.

Three hard knocks.

Then silence.

Daniel glanced toward the entrance.

"Ethan?"

"I wasn't expecting anyone."

The pounding came again.

Louder this time.

"Open the door!"

It was a man's voice.

Deep.

Urgent.

Catherine's heart raced.

Daniel quietly picked up a heavy metal flashlight.

"Ethan, call 911."

Already dialing.

The knocking stopped.

A few seconds later, headlights outside disappeared.

The black SUV drove away without another sound.

Twenty minutes later, two Philadelphia police officers finished inspecting the building.

"There are no signs of forced entry," one officer explained.

"The electrical panel outside was deliberately damaged."

"Can you identify who did it?" Ethan asked.

The officer shook his head.

"The security cameras lost power at the same time."

Professional.

Whoever had done this knew exactly where to strike.

After taking everyone's statements, the officers left.

Daniel locked the office door behind them.

Ethan plugged a portable battery into one of the computers.

The screen flickered back to life.

He smiled.

"They failed."

"What?"

"The files are still here."

Catherine let out the breath she had been holding.

That evening, Ethan copied every document onto an encrypted government-grade storage device.

He handed it to Catherine.

"This stays with you."

She hesitated.

"I don't even know what half of these documents mean."

"You don't need to."

He looked serious.

"But someone else will."

Daniel crossed his arms.

"The FBI."

Ethan nodded.

"I've seen enough corporate fraud cases to recognize this."

He pointed toward one spreadsheet.

"These transactions involve interstate wire transfers."

Another document.

"Offshore shell companies."

Another.

"Possible tax fraud."

He looked directly at Catherine.

"This is federal."

Across town, Michael sat alone in his office long after everyone else had gone home.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown Number.

He answered cautiously.

"...Hello?"

"They found the drive."

Michael froze.

"What?"

"They know about Project Legacy."

His face lost all color.

"That's impossible."

"They opened it."

Michael stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

"Listen to me."

His voice shook.

"Do not go near Catherine."

The man on the other end laughed.

"You still think you're giving orders?"

"I'll cooperate."

"Too late."

"I'll testify."

Another laugh.

"Should've done that three years ago."

The call ended.

Michael stared at the dark screen.

For the first time in years...

He looked genuinely afraid.

Not for himself.

For Catherine.

An hour later, Catherine's doorbell rang.

Rachel immediately looked through the peephole.

"Oh, absolutely not."

Michael.

Standing alone.

Rain soaked his jacket.

His face looked exhausted.

Rachel opened the door only halfway.

"What do you want?"

"I need to see Catherine."

"No."

"It's important."

"So was childbirth."

Michael closed his eyes.

"I deserve that."

Rachel folded her arms.

"You deserve worse."

Catherine stepped into the hallway.

"It's okay."

Rachel turned.

"No, it isn't."

"It has to be."

After a long moment, Rachel reluctantly stepped aside.

Michael entered slowly.

His eyes immediately searched the room.

"Where's Emma?"

"Asleep."

Relief crossed his face.

"Good."

Catherine remained standing several feet away.

"You have five minutes."

Michael didn't waste them.

"You need to leave this house."

Rachel laughed.

"Nice try."

"I'm serious."

Catherine frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Michael lowered his voice.

"Someone is watching you."

Her heartbeat quickened.

"I already know."

His eyes widened.

"You know?"

"I know enough."

Michael ran both hands through his hair.

"Damn it."

He began pacing.

"I never wanted this."

Rachel scoffed.

"You never wanted your mistress either?"

Michael ignored her.

"This started years ago."

He looked at Catherine.

"When I became Regional Director..."

"I discovered financial fraud inside the company."

She stared silently.

"I reported it."

"And?"

"They offered me a choice."

His voice cracked.

"Join them..."

"...or lose everything."

Rachel frowned.

"So you became corrupt?"

"No."

Michael looked ashamed.

"I pretended to."

"You pretended for three years?"

"I was gathering evidence."

Catherine shook her head.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I know how it sounds."

"It sounds insane."

Michael reached into his coat pocket.

He slowly removed a worn leather wallet.

Inside was a gold badge.

Catherine's eyes narrowed.

"What is that?"

Michael placed it on the table.

She picked it up.

Two words caught her attention.

Federal Bureau of Investigation

Rachel stared.

"What..."

Michael spoke quietly.

"I've been working undercover."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Catherine looked from the badge...

To Michael...

Then back again.

"No."

"It's real."

"No."

He pulled another folded document from his pocket.

A signed federal authorization.

His name.

Case number.

Official seals.

"I couldn't tell you."

Tears filled his eyes.

"If I had..."

"...you would've been in danger."

Catherine's voice trembled.

"So instead..."

"You cheated on me?"

Michael closed his eyes.

"The affair..."

"It was real."

"I won't lie about that."

"I made choices I can never undo."

"But the investigation..."

He pointed toward the flash drive.

"...that's real too."

Rachel spoke first.

"If this is true..."

"Why abandon your wife during labor?"

Michael looked completely broken.

"Because..."

He swallowed hard.

"...the people I was investigating told me..."

"If I came to the hospital..."

"They would kill Catherine..."

"...and our daughter."

The room fell silent.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Then Catherine whispered the question she had feared asking since the storm.

"Are we still in danger?"

Michael looked straight into her eyes.

His answer came without hesitation.

"Yes."

"And now..."

He glanced toward the dark window.

"...they know exactly where to find you."

Just then—

A deafening explosion shattered every window at the front of the house.

Glass rained across the living room.

Emma began screaming upstairs.

Rachel ducked instinctively.

Michael threw himself toward Catherine.

Outside...

A black SUV sped away into the night.

And lying in the middle of the street, illuminated by the flashing porch light, was a single black envelope.

Across the front, in blood-red letters, were six chilling words:

STOP DIGGING... OR SHE DIES.
