**CHAPTER 2 THE ADMIRAL'S SALUTE**

The doors of the ballroom opened.

At first, nobody paid attention.

The music continued.

The conversations continued.

Then someone noticed the uniform.

And everything stopped.

A man walked inside wearing a Navy dress uniform covered with medals.

His silver hair was perfectly groomed.

His expression was calm.

But the moment people recognized him, the entire room changed.

“Is that…”

“Admiral Reed?”

Whispers spread instantly.

Admiral Jonathan Reed.

One of the most respected military leaders in the country.

A man who rarely appeared at private events.

A man who never attended corporate celebrations.

My father immediately stepped forward.

“Admiral Reed.”

His smile returned.

The businessman mask.

“An honor to have you here.”

The Admiral ignored him.

His eyes moved directly toward me.

For the first time that night…

Someone looked at me like they knew who I really was.

He walked across the marble floor.

Every step echoed.

Then he stopped in front of me.

And raised his hand.

He saluted.

The entire room froze.

My father’s expression changed.

My brother stopped smiling.

Nobody understood.

Except me.

Because Admiral Reed had been there that night.

He knew.

He knew about the burning ship.

He knew about the sailors.

He knew about the sacrifice.

“Commander Celeste Whitmore,” he said loudly.

“Former captain of the rescue operation aboard the USS Resolute.”

The room went silent.

“She saved forty-seven sailors.”

A murmur moved through the crowd.

“She refused evacuation until every member of her crew was safe.”

My father stared at me.

Confusion replacing arrogance.

Admiral Reed continued.

“For her courage, leadership, and extraordinary service, she was awarded the highest military recognition.”

Nobody spoke.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody looked at me like a failure anymore.

Then my father’s hand loosened.

The crystal glass slipped.

May you like

It hit the marble floor.

And shattered.
