Chapter 4: The Courtroom

Four months later, Courtroom 7B was filled long before the hearing began.

Journalists crowded the gallery.

Executives whispered behind polished oak benches.

Emily entered carrying Grace.

She wore a navy suit instead of mourning black.

Confidence suited her better.

Adrian sat beside his attorneys.

He looked exhausted.

Older.

When Judge Briggs entered, the courtroom fell silent.

"The evidence demonstrates intentional omission of marital assets."

She turned several pages.

"The court also finds repeated attempts to mislead financial disclosures."

Adrian closed his eyes.

The ruling lasted nearly forty minutes.

Emily received restoration of her ownership interest in Carter Holdings.

The concealed assets were returned to the marital estate for lawful division.

Adrian personally paid substantial financial penalties and legal costs.

Most importantly...

Judge Briggs confirmed Grace's permanent status as protected heir under the Carter Family Trust.

No future marriage...

No future child...

No amended will...

Could erase that right.

Outside the courthouse, cameras flashed endlessly.

Reporters shouted questions.

Emily ignored every microphone.

She adjusted Grace's blanket and walked calmly toward her waiting car.

For the first time in years...

She owed nobody an explanation.
